my computer is really messed up with alot of parasites I cant delete. Its gotten so bad I have to run my PC in SAFE mode. A little while ago I made a thread about my PC messing up and y'all gave me alot of suggestions of web programs. Ive run Adaware and it doesn't find any parasites anymore.
what do you do when you go to do a disk cleanup and your computer freezes everytime it gets to the part about deleting temp internet files?
LooneyT, Its not always parasites that cause all the trouble....you might just have some severely corrupted system files(a very common occurance on Windows machines).....but it is difficult to tell based only on what you have said so far...more information is always a good thing. Hayes, try to cleanup the temp internet files from within IE...tools, internet options......or from within the control panel....under internet options of course... sometimes, the disk cleanup seems to take its bloody sweet time at cleaning up...also...does it just take a long time? or does it actually lockup the machine? try giving it some time to do it..... Ups.....LIAR!
Run some Antivirus Also, run Spybot S+D See how that goes. If it goes well, start using Firefox . . .
Use the Scan/Restore command in dos promt ...this will restore your window setting to the last setting that had a successfull boot-up. If that don't work than you need to clear out all of your hard drive and restore all of its program with the included restore disk.This is the only permenantly way to clear out viruses that I know but you will end up losing some files. What do you do mostly on your PC? If all you do is go to p*rn site that will mess it up.
Just a concerned web user . . . It's so awesome. I did this really cool thing with it for the students this year -- they each have a portion of space on the network called the F:\ Drive, where they can store documents and such, then retrieve them anywhere. So what I've done is link their Firefox profile into the F:\ Drive, which gives them the same bookmarks, settings, themes, extensions, etc. wherever they go on campus. It's the only part of their profile that roams. And they are forced to use Firefox because IE doesn't have the proxy settings in it, and the students can't add the proxy settings. 1000 converts to Firefox
Thanks. I tried it from within IE first. That doesn't work because it freezes. When I run the disk cleanup it actually shuts my laptop off, as it screen turns black and machine turns off, not through a windows close down. i've done scans with norton (updated definitions), webroot spy sweeper, spybot s &d but that doesn't seem to help either. also i used aol's computer scan thingy and it also froze when it got to the part about deleting temp internet files.
ok...next thing....we gonna have to do a manual delete. you need to figger out where your temp internet files are stored, and go thru and delete them manually. you didnt say what os you are using....in XP, they are stashed in the Documents and Settings folder under your username. another option.....have you tried to delete them from safe mode? reboot and F8 before the OS starts loading, and choose Safe Mode..then try again. If that doesnt work then go back to my previous idea of deleting manually.
I've used Adware, Spybot S&D, and now Im runing Spy Sweeper... I have windows 2000 but my g/f's dad custom built the PC. Ive deleted all my temp internet files, even the offline ones. My problem is, when I am logging on to the PC, put in my password and everything, it tries to start up, then 10 seconds later the PC reboots itself. So I have to do everything in SAFE mode now. Where would those files be you were talking about, for me to delete manually? and how do You run that DOS mode promt to restore the PC?
Hayes, You can also manually delete your temporary internet files in Windows Explorer. I can give you the path and directions if you tell me what OS you are running.
Use your bootup disk floppy to start the dos prompt and type in C:scanreg/restore ....it will than ask you to pick the previously successfull boot which is already put in memory for you, just highlite it and it will ask you to reboot. This will your reset your window to its original setting to when it was successful without losing any files. If you lost your bootup disk, just go to www.bootdisk.com and find one for WIN2000 and load it up onto a floppy disk. *Remember to insert the floppy first before starting the computer for the dos prompt to start up.*
Win2000 uses 5 bootdisks...or is it 6? anyway...it takes more than just one bootdisk for win2k/XP. Looney, I concur with andy on this.....sounds like it is gonna be a real pain to go thru the steps required to fix your problem...if a repair console system restore doesnt work...just go ahead and buckup and reinstall. if you dont have a clue what the repair console is...it is not gonna be easy to fix your problem...and on top of that, it may possibly not work for you. My experience with using thr system file repair/restore option in 2k/XP shows that it rarely(less than 40%of the time) solves the problem. /ot.... damn, it feels good to be a gangsta...
