Struggling Cavaliers fire Silas as coach
    March 21, 2005
    SportsLine.com wire reports

CLEVELAND -- Paul Silas was fired as coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday with his team fighting for a playoff spot after being in first place earlier in the year.

Silas told the Associated Press he was called in Monday morning for a brief meeting with general manager Jim Paxson and new owner Dan Gilbert.

"They released me," Silas said. "They didn't think the team was performing as well as it should be and they wanted to make a change."

Despite having league superstar LeBron James, the Cavaliers have struggled since the All-Star break, losing seven of 10 and nine straight road games, including Sunday's 105-98 loss to Toronto when James scored a franchise-record 56.

an overrated team not meeting bloated expectations gets a good coach fired.

The Owners and Management need to get the control back in the league. It has been in the players hands for far too long.

One former player of Paul Silas' who shall remain nameless and obvious talked to me about him once, at length. He basically said that while he and Silas got along great, that Silas was n-u-t-s. That he sorta scared the players because they thought for real he was batsh*t insane.

I love that. I hope he is batsh*t insane. I love Paul Silas. Nice work, Cleveland.

Although I am sure the Phil Jacksons or Larry Browns or other coach whores of the world would love a chance to gravy-train LeBron.

(dinging triangle with metal rod) Come and get it, vultures!

I'll take batsh*t insane and potentially great over generic and competent anyday. Good Lord, it's March 21st, who fires coaches this late? Will the interim be allowed to coach the Cavs in the playoffs, or did they miss the cut-off date?

For a single bad run? They're still the 5th seed! Wow, talk about stupid.

Only one thing would make this look good, and that's if they did it to bring in Flip or Phil before other teams could court them in the summer. But since Phil isn't coming back this season, and Flip is at best a slight upgrade over Silas, I'm back to thinking this was just plain dumb.

Word was that Silas was already close the the chopping block anyway. He probably would have been fired this summer. But I am surprised it is being done right now!

I bet Paxson will be soon to follow. They have a new owner and the new owner is going to want to get HIS people in there.

I bet Jim O'brien in Philly is the next coach to get canned too.

That's crazy. Did anyone expect the Cavs to be better than what they're showing?

This is where Phil Jackson steps in... ;)

Pretty shocking that they would fire their coach this late in the season. It's only a matter of time before a coach is fired during the playoffs.

I think teams are just trying to make room for Phil Jackson.

If Phil returns to coaching next season he's going to have his pick of superstars: Marbury, Garnett, or Lebron? AI+ Webber may soon be available.

And Paul Allen has more than enough money to try and entice Phil to a Portland team, even if it is a wreck.

Phil could get 20 Million+ a season. He's this seasons big offseason Free Agent. Ray Allen ain't got nothing on him.

I wonder if they did this sans Lebron. I thought that he and Lebron were pretty close. Has anyone heard anything about their relationship deteriorating? Hard to imagine them turning loose Silas without Lebron being at least okay with it if not endorsing it.

I wonder if we will hear another tirade from Van Gundy about how bad Cleveland's management is.

I hope the JVG haters don't get word of this... since they are in the 5th spot and they still fired their coach

WOW, I thought this was a joke... I know they lost lastnight, but still.. a coach can only take team so far and even in the east they are about a 4-6 seed team... WOW, JUST WOW!!! Should he have kept his mouth shut about CB?? Yes, but he is one hell of a coach...

    Sometimes it's the coach.

When Kurt Rambis couldn't win with Shaq and Kobe, it was Jackson who pulled them together.

LeBron is already one of the top 10 players in the game, Ilgauskas is a very good player, McInnis and Gooden are both solid starters.

Their depth isn't fantastic but the team's starting talent should produce more wins.

    Lebron is 20!

Z is a border-line all-star, with slow feet and a history of injury problems.

McInnis and Gooden are both young, and nothing but role-players. Neither of these players are going to be future all-stars.

Frankly, I think they're exactly where they should be... developing into the habit of winning consistently. This had to be about something other than just production.
