One of my fondest memories of my time at UT is when he came into KVRX for a small SXSW performance. It was one of our DJs, him, and his guitarist in the booth and he gave an incredible performance live on the air. You could tell that he'd been through some **** and was channeling it through music.

    Here's the clip:

There was a fair amount of of experimenting in music in the 60's, but Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple do seem to be recognized as Leaders or the end result of that Evolution. Perhaps - probably Hendrix belongs with them as well.

Some early Rockers, Blues Rockers, Garage Rock, Proto Punk ...
    • Yardbirds
    • The Animals (Eric Burdon)
    • The Sonics
    • MC5
    • Cream
    • Fleetwood Mac (Early Years With Peter Green)
    • Iggy Pop and the Stooges
    • GFR (Grand Funk Railroad)
I won't say that the above are Forefathers of Hard Rock, but they tended to have more of an Edge than other bands from that Era.

Wow, I was actually surprised by this because he had just finished his last gig a few weeks ago and thought he was doing OK...............but you never know when its your time. It`s ironic, growing up in the 80`s when Ozzy was HUGE I though he was a satanic bat biting weirdo, but that's not who he was at all.................it was all marketing and I loved every minute of it. I really liked his reality show with his family

    RIP Legend

Four others that contributed to hard rock/heavy metal

    Jimi Hendrix
    The Stooges
    Mountain
    Blue Cheer

For more rock history I recommend watching the 1988 documentary The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years as well as the 2005 doc Metal: A Headbanger's Journey

Saw him at least twice in concert. Most notably was Texxas Jam with Rush also in the lineup at Astrodome and Ozzy was final act I believe. Also saw Metallica opened for Ozzy on first leg of “The Ultimate Sin” tour. I also recall having to talk my Mom into letting me see him live as she had the bat incident in her crosshairs. Don’t recall a lot from the shows except he descended from above in his throne chair during one show and he was always high energy workhorse on stage firing everyone up. Have to break out the ticket stubs as may have seen him other times. Surviving members of Rush said they only ever met Ozzy at Texxas Jam. They were invited by Sharon to play Ozzy’s final show but had to bow out. I still remember spinning Ozzy vinyl in my youth…especially Black Sabbath and Blizzard of Oz. Was always a fan but especially in high school. Hope Ozzy was greeted by Randy and they are jamming up a big party somewhere.

Sometimes having a good time the traditional cultured way around the world (drugs, alcohol, toxic food and beverage as well) which doesn't compare to the chemical reaction of natural sex or a hard physical excursion for those that never experienced or think far enough. Ted Nugent picked the latter for the most part. RIP Ozzy

Ozzy and Richard Simmons were around the same age. He outlasted the so called fitness guru.

Fitness Guru doesn't equate to expert. I don't blame the insufficient knowledge circles that claim such things.

    Ozzy Osbourne:
    Fearless.
    One of a kind.
    Played by no one's rules.

"I remember listening to the first Sabbath album when it came out and thinking how 'effin' heavy' Tony Iommi's guitar sounded," said Geddy Lee. "Ozzy and his bandmates were at the forefront of that genre, that brand of Metal, and Ozzy was an intensely loved, one of a kind performer.

We never got to play on the same bill with Black Sabbath, and in fact we only ever did one gig with Ozzy, at the Texas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in June of 1984 (poster attached).

Rush recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales at the same time in the late 70's and I recall Ozzy poking his head in the control room to ask if he could "borrow" some Hashish from Neil! For years afterwards, Neil relished telling the story of how "Ozzy owes me some hash" ;)

Total respect to a legend and a band whose music profoundly influenced thousands of musicians and left behind a legacy for us all to "rock out" to forever.

    RIP Ozzy

It appears Geddy forgot that they played the Astrodome two days before the Cotton Bowl. Pretty funny. The Astrodome show was crazy in my section…so much so that a snortable vial of cocaine was being passed around our section and went through my hands but not up my nose. Crazy. Also, doobage was plentiful at that show. I actually found a doobie in the parking lot on the way into the show. I was pretty popular after that. lol
