Aren't they out of season? I thought oyster season was all the months ending in -er. Septemb-er, Octob-er, Novemb-er, Decemb-er.

If Houston ever gets a NHL team they should name them the Oysters.

The idea of the 'R' in the month is to eat your oysters when the water they live in is colder, hence less bacteria, since they are filter feeders. (September thru April)

    Hmmm, want some more?

I actually loved raw oyters, ate 'em since I was knee high but in the last few years I've decided it's probably a health risk I don't need to take since you can just eat the cocktail sauce on the cracker and get about the same flavor sensation. I'll eat 'em fried or smoked.

But to each his own. You guys are younger and healthier than me.

I just spent this whole weekend with my girlfriend's family saying chuc mung nam moi to hundreds of Vietnamese Catholics. The food was amazing.

My wife and I tried raw oysters for the first time several weeks ago when we were in Minneapolis and absolutely loved them. We haven't been able to have them since but we will soon.

Are there any places that have better oysters than others?

Took the words right outta my mouth. I need to find an oyster bar around here that has them cheap on certain nights. I could see myself devouring a large amount throughout the course of a bball game as long as the price doesn't kill me.

My brothers wife's family is in the oyster business and they told me its because in the old days only the 'er months could keep the oysters fresh for transport etc. Now with all the refrigeration options that isn't a factor.

They harvest all over, so if one area isn't good for whatever reason they go to other reefs. Salinity, amount of fresh water moving into the bays, restocking reefs, etc are more reasons for why certain areas aren't harvested at certain times.

Oysters spawn in the summer months, so they aren't quite as plump and juicy, more soft and milky. They should still be perfectly healthy to eat though.

Thanks for this thread. I haven't had oysters in a while, and 4 bucks for a dozen is cheap as hell.

I will definitely be heading to Pappadeaux's this week.

BTW, anyone know where in Houston has the best oysters?

And, as an aside, for anyone who enjoys cooked oysters, you HAVE to go to Goode company seafood. They have an oyster appetizer that is wrapped in sirloin. It is one of the best appetizers I've ever had.

I love me some oysters. I don't know what it is about raw or nearly raw meats but I love them. Oysters, sushi, black and blue steaks. WOW!
