Exactly. If you think Bush and DeLay are TYRANTS, then I have no desire to discuss politics with you. You are unable to recognize true tyranny, so why start a debate? People like you are part of the problem of worldwide oppression. When you folks equate Bush with the Chinese government, the Saudi Royal Family or the Iranian Mullahs, you minimize the terrible plight of those who have had their inalienable rights truly stolen.
Some of you might look negatively at birth control, but if it's not applied, India happens. A friend of mine who went to India described the poverty as hell on earth. Most of the people lived in slums, open sewers, and people going #2 on the streets. And he was in one of the bigger cities. India with less than half the land mass of the US is set to overtake China as the most populous country in the world. If it's hell now, it'll be hell x10 soon.
I favor aggressive birth control programs, including mandatory sterilization after a certain number of children, particularly in countries like India.
I spent a summer in India in the mid-'60's. Back then the population was 600+ million. Today, it's a billion and is still growing like mad. I saw a lot of what mleahy mentioned... people finding a place to sleep an hour before dark on the side of the road, next to sidewalks to get the safer areas. Doing their "business" right there. Being paid a dollar a day if they were lucky and trying to feed their family on it. India wasn't hell on earth back then, and it's not hell on earth today, but it's "hell on earth" for the majority of it's people. It's changing, in many ways for the better. The city I spent most of my time in, Bangalore, is today a high tech center taking jobs from American workers. But they HAVE to do something about exploding pop. growth, as do many other 2nd and 3rd world countries. Like I said, we're heading for a train wreck and the Administrations policies aren't helping, in my opinion. They are an obstruction. Let's remove it.
I think as 2nd and 3rd world countries advance technologically, the population growth will be reigned in significantly (to the low levels of America and Western Europe). Mandatory sterilization is a no-no for various moral, procedural, and legal reasons, but giving them non-abortificient (sp?) birth control and education and infrastructure is what we need to do. This is a problem that needs addressing, but I think addressing quality-of-life issues in these areas will curb population growth as a side benefit.
yeah forced sterilisation may sound like a great idea, but... in every instance it has been implemented in the past, it has faced infamy and abandonment. China's attempt against Tibetans http://www.tibet.ca/wtnarchive/1993/12/23_2.html India's attempt against poor under Indira Gandhi http://pub18.ezboard.com/fbalkansfrm21.showMessage?topicID=14.topic Peru's attempt against indigenous peoples under Fujimori http://www.crlp.org/pr_02_0729peru.html The Catholic Church's official stance against contraceptive birth control doesn't help either. our best hope i'm afraid is: 1) war 2) plague 3) more widespread education/prosperity 4) outer space / deep ocean colonisation other than that, a pretty bleak malthusian future awaits us all.
I agree your opinion. Though I am from China. Our population problem is very seriously. I also can come up with some data to confirm that environment is more improtant than population at present.
