Well after the hoop it up Saturday at UH I went and played some more hoops Sunday (yesterday afternoon).

Well close to the end of the first game, I come down on my right foot wrong, my ankle rolls and I feel something pop and I am down and out fast. Feels like a sprained ankle? So I take the shoe off, boom it swells. Did I leave and go home? Emergency room? Nah I sat out a game and then played a game. Hoping around like a kangaroo. Once I got home and checked it out, not good at all. I can barely walk on it, it hurts to put any weight. Swollen, sore and bruised.

I guess I'll go to the doctor tomorrow. I've tried an Ace bandage, but man it just hurts worse. Ibuprofen and beer sure help though. I haven't iced it much either, just hurts more. So check out these pics...

    Ouch 1

    Ouch 2

    Ouch 3

    Ouch 4

Any advice?? I've never had anything like this happen before, I guess that's what happens when you get old... :p

    Sonny,

My wife was walking behind me when I loaded up one of those pics. The look on her face was priceless. She said, and this is a direct quote, "Whats with the hairy brick foot?"

Seriously though, that is some serious swelling. Ice and hot compresses.

Disclaimer: I am not an orthapedic Dr., but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Could it be broke, does a normal ankle sprain do this much swelling and bruising?

    Man does that suck.

So much for playing ball for the next few weeks.

    "play til i drop"
    - or until my ankle says no more.

I only took a peek at one picture, and I can tell it is extremely swollen.

Sonny loves the game of basketball. He kept playing on a spained ankle.

    Get well

You might want to go to the doc to check it out. When i bruised my ankle i heard a pop, i walked on it some but afterwards rested, the next day the pain is worse, it was more swollen and i couldn't even walk. When I went to the doc, they confirmed that there was nothing big but you still want to check it out to be safe. And they'll give you cruches and wrap you ankle so i think it'd be a good idea even if it's nothing serious.

Sonny - first things first re-size your pics ;)

now to the ankle, i have rolled mine numerous times

It looks bad, but not that bad

Ice ICE baby, the normally theory and practice is to stay off it for a day or two at most and then starting walking on it normally as much as possible.

There are creams you can put on that help bring the bruising out quicker, damn can't remember the name, will post when i get home in a few hours.

you can try anti-inflammatories if you want, but the jury is out them, they can have some effect but it is not that much.

once you can start walking, then try stretching/ rotating your ankle, balancing on the bad ankle also helps and then try to stand just on your toes, a wobble board can help regain strength in it.

    ice ice baby

I was always told that if you can walk on it..it aint broken.

maybe seriously strained/sprained..or at worst...a torn tendon..

    ouch...

I just informed her that she made your day and she threw in a couple of more zingers: 1) "He must be italian or something" 2) "He has more hair on his feet than you do on your head" (i am bald)

Must be the drugs shes on.

You should post your foot picture on YoYao's "Hot or Not" website.

it is possible, unlikely but no impossible, the cracking sounds people hear when the do injuries are normally tendon moving over the bone, and moving into an out of place position. if you go to a dr they will normally send you for an xray anyway. if you can weight bare on it now then i would doubt it is broken. in short i would doubt it, but it is safe to rule it out.

    Sonny,
I had a similar situation before, just a sprained ankle... took me about 2 months to fully recover... good luck man!

About 6 years ago when I went up for a rebound that was a little over/past my head, had to reach back, was off balance, came down on 1 leg, and the foot on that leg landed on someone else's foot.

I heard and felt a loud pop, my ankel turned so badly that the outer ankle bone actually hit the concrete and scraped the skin. I screamed like a little girl for about 60 seconds, sat out a game, hobbled through the next game and, viola . . . my ankle looked exactly like yours. Eerily similar.

Well, it was swollen for about 2-3 weeks. My girlfriend finally made me go see a doctor. No break and the student clinic couldn't really tell what was wrong. I thought for sure I tore some ligament. About 2 months later, i was playing ball again.

If yours is similar, the only thing I suggest is to move your ankle around after 2-3 weeks, to keep scar tissue from building up.

That looks pretty swollen, not entirely unlike mine last April.

If it's broken, you wouldn't really even be able to walk on it without excruciating pain, or so I found out. Mine was that swollen, but I couldn't put any pressure on it and I was screaming bloody murder for a couple of hours.

Later, the pain subsided into occasional sharp pains (instead of continual ones), but that didn't change the fact that the ankle was broken. What I'm trying to say is that you should have an x-ray taken on it, to confirm that it's not broken. You don't want to end up with further troubles down the road because you didn't have it checked out now.

I'm no doctor, but I'd say it's probably 50/50 broke or not; if there wasn't as much swelling, I'd say it's probably not broken. Have an x-ray taken - they aren't too expensive - and save yourself the trouble later. It'll be worth it.

Same thing happened to me. I'd say its a bad sprain. Stay off it a couple months at least.

I didn't know that HOBBITS played basketball.....as for advice, cut your toenails.

Also go see a doctor, it looks like a pretty bad sprain.
