I know he hates Vancouver and that he loved Houston so what about getting him back? Is he a free agent after the year, or did the Rocks already sign him to a multi-year deal before last year, I can't remember.
Anyway, he isn't a stud, but he surely could be a good compliment at the four spot to Francis, Anderson, and Wiz(or whoever they get at the 3)

Harrington is good but I love KT. I think Kenny is better than Othella and now Kenny gets a better start then Harrington. Othella was a bench player when he was a rookie but Kenny has been getting good minutes and playing well. Keeping Kenny is a nice investment for the future.

    Draft Othella!!!

I know I'm in a relatively small club here, but I think he'd complement our offense/defense perfectly next season. He shoots around 50%, and if left alone he'll shoot 80% and grab 12+ rebs. Actually, I see he and KT rotating time with a star C in a future Houston lineup - when we have cap room for another superstar [IMG]. This would present a consistent 48-minute scoring and rebounding threat, which would allow our backcourt to have a relative field day...

It would also be much cheaper than luring another star FA Center or PF... Think about it.

I started a thread about this exact topic, shortly after the Rockets vs. Suns on TNT over a month ago...I remembered Charles saying we needed post scoring, and I thought about Othella. I think he's better than KT , and I'd like to know what his contract status and plans are for the upcoming season.

At times I like Kenny, but I really would rather have Othella for one reason.
Watching the games this year it sometimes seems that Kenny is just going through the motions and really isnt hustling or trying. But Othella, in every game I have seen with him, hustled his ass off. He might not be as talented (God given) as Kenny, but I think I would rather have him at the 4 spot than Kenny, or anyone else we currently have, because with Othella you get hustle. And with Francis, Cuttino, and Shandon as a good base you need a 4 that is going to be all about hustling, and getting easy garbage baskets.

To the best of my knowledge, Outlaw plays primarily at the 3 position (only 6' 8" and 215 lbs). With that being said, I'd love to have him with the Rocks anyway. He's a great defender and shotblocker and would be improve team defense greatly playing along side Shandon and Cato. He does leave something to be desired on offense though.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the Magic really like this guy and can't really see them trading him for anything that we have. [IMG]

    TB Cain,

Good points but that is only half of the story. Othella is a black hole on offense, he just does not pass the ball.

KT is already one of, if not the, best passers from the 4 position in the NBA. KT's ceiling is a lot higher then Othella's. That being said, I would not mind having him as a sub.

Wooo, boy, have we got a deal for you in Vancouver! When Othella came here, we thought he would be the best part of the Francis trade but after watching him for a whole season as a starter, we've got a few weensy little problems:

Black Holism(DaDa got it right!): On a team like the Griz, where the passing is none too sharp anyways, Othella swallows up the time clock like something out of the X-files. The truth is out there somewhere, Othella, and it's going to go bzzzzz real soon.

Waltz of the Toreadors D: We affectionately call Othella, Ole' (sorry, I don't know how to make one of those acute marks). One of the snarky fans out here did an extensive analysis of where the Grizzlies most often get killed by the opposition -- it wasn't Reef, Bibby, Dickerson or even Country's position by a longshot -- guess who? As a starter in the West, Oath Hella has been brutal with his D -- not only on the Webbers and Wallaces but on the second line guys, too. Country almost always gets in early foul trouble by vainly trying to cover Harrington's buttices on the slowest rotations known to mankind - the two of them are thinking of putting traffic cones along the paint to help the opposition see better for dunking and offensive rebounding.

Hang On Sloopy: Oafella, as he is often called, has the most amazing hands, buttery smooth on his own shots but the moment he is to receive a pass, they turn to non-stick PAM. You guys complain about Cato dropping Stevie's bullets all the time but believe me Bibby has probably lost more assists on beauties smacking off Othella's hands than Francis has turnovers.

Free Foul Anyone? Perhaps the most annoying habit we see is OH's ability to mess up the simplest pick or get a useless foul and change the momentum. Did he never have to set a screen in Houston? Did he always play with a scowl-on for the Refs? Did he love the obvious elbow last year, too?

Having said all that, we think he is one hell of a player and you're welcome to make us an offer we can't refuse -- how's this? We'll take Cato and Dream and you guys can have Country and Othella. Seriously, we see great flashes of what Othella was doing in Houston and he tantalizes us (particularly with that long-term, cheap contract he's got) but on the Grizzlies, he just isn't what we need. If we were to get rid of him, we might be able to move Reef to the 4, get Country the touches he needs to loosen up (lately, he's looked like he has hooves for hands) and get a small forward who can shoot from the outside. I actually think Othella can be a very useful 20 - 25 minute guy off the bench and, with his dirt cheap contract, he would work well again on the Rockets -- but he is not a starter unless you get him a head replacement.

    Othella and KT

Let me preface this by saying I love both Othella's and Kenny's game. Othella I still have a nice warm fuzzy for, and would love to see him play here again. But,man I just love this southwestern rookie. KT is a straight up gamer folks.

The comparisons should probably start and finish with these parameters: They both play the 4/5 (although O played more 5 in Georgetown and in Houston than KT), they both are exceptional athletes and they both played with the Rox at one time.

A couple of things to remember when comparing KT and O.

    1. Rookies have 20 to 30 games of "short game" playtime. Adjusting as a team player that plays 82 games is a formidable task. KT deserves, just as Francis does, to have a game of "floating" when he may be a little less effective in his role.

    2. KT has played in more minutes this year than Othella played in his first two years in a Rox uni. It is probably "wishful mis-remmberance" by a true Othella fan if anyone feels Othella would have performned better under the same conditions.

    3. Although increased PT has allowed a young KT to hone his game much quicker than Othella, it also has meant: (a) trial by fire (constantly in that "accelerated learning" mode, game-in & game-out), (b) carrying the responsibility of a starting position (the 4) on his rookie shoulders( being depended upon by teamates), and (c) maintaining a productive level despite these and other(like never getting a decent foul call) factors. I know that is what the pro game is supposed to be, but as an unheralded rookie, the pressures and stress have got to be considered when comparing the two players.

In short, it is not surprising that he looked a little war-torn and "unhustled" out there. I remember Othella being called upon (actually platooned along with Bryant one season and Willis in another season) to anchor a portion of the line up when Hakeem had extended injuries. Othella had that same harried and unhustle look about him during several games. Year one and two!! And he was never called upon to play the minutes KT has putting up.

Anyway I guess that is my point. Cheers. See ya'll at the game!

Just to answer the original question, Othella signed a new contract when the lockout ended. He's not a free agent this year.

To continue the comparison of KT and O, I think you have to mention FG%. Regardless of which year you pick, O never had a year shooting like KT. KT is at 39%, jacking up 118 3's for 26%. Cut out the 3's and he's having a decent rookie year at 43%.

Othella's worst year shooting the ball was 48% in his 2nd year. Every other year was better than 50%. Othella never hurts you offensively. Even his FT% is in the mid-70's. Best of all: 6 career 3PA. I betting a buzzer was going off in-flight.

KT has some nice skills, but he's got an offseason of work ahead of him. I'm just hoping he doesn't focus on his 3-pt shooting. I think he could develop into a better player than Othella, but it's not this season, and probably won't be next.

I will say this for KT, he was able to find a pair of shorts that fit him in less time than it took Othella. [IMG]
