This made my week. Props to you. This made the Texans loss and the TV I punched seem much less important. Thanks for this post.
I work at the transplant dept at the UTHSC in San Antonio. We cut up dead bodies and harvest their organs. It is a gruesome job. Just a note though. When you die the consent people ask your family for your organs and if they say yes then they will take your organs. You have no say in the matter because ofcourse your dead!
Except that you can thank the media (TV, mainly, and some newspapers) that the boogyman really DOES exist. Spoiler But, really, I meant: Spoiler  I haven't said "YES" and since the default is NO then I'd just rather not find out. I just know I don't want to die EVER, and I won't.
I told my family that when I die I want them to tell whoever comes and asks for my organs to go take a hike. The body is reconstructed with pvc pipes and towels. What bothers me the most is when they take the eyes!
I see what you're saying. You understand that it's irrational But I'm sorry, I just don't understand. Seriously? You got your license to practice, and you have no religious reasons...and yet you aren't an organ donor? Seriously? You'd let someone die or live a shorter life for no reason? I just can't understand it. I'm probably gonna be an ******* for writing it. But I don't get it. (Though I don't have them, I certainly understand religious reasons or similar things.)
The thought of some lucky b*stard having my penis after I die was unsettling at first, but then I thought to myself, why should I be a player hater. I signed the consent form soon after that.
Well, I'm going to sound like a bigger ******* with my response. But seriously, I just don't really care about strangers. Whether they live or die really don't really affect my feelings either way. For example, I literally feel nothing about those suffering from natural disasters. And I only write checks to help out of seemingly societal obligations rather than any genuine concern.
eh, I don't think you're really an ******* for that. It's perfectly understandable. But I don't see how you can be in the profession and not give a crap. And regardless, who cares if you care about others or not? Once you're dead, how does it matter what you care about? Do you care about your dead body? I guess I'd think you should care as much about others as you do about your own dead body....so shouldn't that be enough reason?
I want to donate my organs (if they still work) because I going to be cremated, so the organs would waste anyhow, so why not give to another person, a chance to live more, if Im dead already.
The Organs have to be taken within a certain matter of time so they can be preserved. If not then they are useless and have to be discarded. Not all are used transplants. Some are used for research and development. The Processors purchase them from us and harvest them. The transplant business is big money.
Interesting that this thread came out. A friend of mine received a heart and double lung transplant a few weeks ago....
I think when he said he got his license, he meant his driver's license - not medical license. When you get your driver's license, you state whether you want to be an organ donor, right?
Nope. Young guy (early 30's). I never really asked what was wrong, since he never told. I'm just glad he made it and is recovering.
When supply > demand, probably when everyone are donating their organs, the situation you mentioned here may not happened. My mother suffered from kidney disease and she eventually died without an opportunity to transplant a healthy kidney. She had been waited in the queue for 10 years and she had received the call from hospital for once only. At that time the doctor decided to transplant that precious kidney (or kidneys) to some other patients as they thought (he/she) had a better chance to adapt that kidney(s). But we all know that the other patient(s) got the kidney(s) because he/she was younger than my mom (my mom was 50+ at that time and very weak, heart and lungs are suffered as the complicatons of the kidney disease). It is very difficult to persuade Chinese to donate their orgrans after death not due to religions but some stupid traditional believes. Our Government seldom promote organ donations to the public and they mostly rely on the social workers in the hospital to persuade the relatives when someone died. You can imagine the sucessful rate under such circumstances. I believe I learn from somewhere that Singapore government has a very effective policy which I am all for it. It's like every Singapore citizens are supposed to donate their organs after death and they have to register their denial officially kinda like the reverse of the usual practice in other places. Take this with a pinch of salt.
Do you really feel there's EVER a chance that supply will be greater than demand? It's not exactly a smooth process to match up the harvested organs with their respective patients. I'm pretty sure currently the supply <<<<<<<< demand. Never thought about it this deep. Maybe I'm more attached to my body than I consciously believe. Or maybe I really don't care about helping a stranger's life. Either way, it's not something I can just explain in a logical manner.
