Come on, a dumbass like me is sitting around polluting himself with Guinness at a mindful* tonight, and you guys don't come up with a single thread about the opening ceremonies about the XIX Winter Games in Craptah, USA? K, so I was at a bar with zero sound from the tv's, and I was drinking. But what was with the Native American thing? Was that a good thing, or was it more like throwing them a bone (remember... I couldn't hear a thing)? In addition, may I note that at the Hidden Shamrock in Chicago, the team that got the most applause as they walked in... Ireland. I got goosebumps when the Americans walked in. I was outnumbered... no sound, it was just cool. Anybody have any thoughts as to what went down during the Opening Ceremonies? Was it respectful to American history? Or was it hokie? Did it seem to exploit the natives? Please remember that I didn't have any audio where I was watching. Anyh00, I want all future Winter Olympics (my preferred flavor) to be held in Lillehammer. Dunno why, but it sounds like a Winter Olympics kinda place. Plus Johan Olaf Koss (sp?) 0wned the place. Straight up made the world his b****, he and Georg Hackl did. Memories. * mindful... as I'm informed, it's exactly one month after the death of an Irishman.
I was at Appleby's last night when they were on, and so I didn't have sound, either...but the only thing I saw were the skating klansmen--I couldn't believe it at first. Then the closed caption said they were icicles. Other than that I didn't watch any of the ceremonies...the Olympics don't have the same effect they used to when I was a kid.
I really enjoyed it. Especially since my Uncle was one of the trappers in the ceremony. Its cool because he actually is a mountain man and they searched him out. they didnt get actors to fill these parts. they looked for people with real life experiances in them.
I really enjoyed the opening ceremonies. I really liked the fact that Ireland, France, and the Czech Republic all had US flags and their flags together. The ceremony (the kid with the light, the Indians, and the Buffalo's) was OK. The Torch Ceremony Rocked! I loved the 1980 US Hockey Team and the Sheas/ Bonnie Blair/Dan Jansen/ Jon Glenn. I liked R Kelly and Sting/Yo Yo Ma The ceremony got butchered in the foreign press for being too patriotic. I say piss on them. They don't have a problem with our foreign aid or our military being too patriotic when they need it. http://www.msnbc.com/news/703312.asp Kuwait chimes in... And the wonderful Russian press... Sure these guys can b**** about the Olympics. One is too small to fit a hockey rink in and the other couldn't afford to buy a puck... Sweden also had it's two cents... some good, some bad. The French were confusing... Japan was nice though
I have never seen an Olympics without someone waving an American flag. I dont get what the big deal is. thats fine though, we will put away our flags if they put theirs away. there will be no flag waving at the olympics
I actually enjoyed the opening ceremony. The music was pretty good, and those puppets looked nice. At least they didn't have people dressed up as kangaroos riding bikes..... (see Olympic Games, 1996 Atlanta, Closing Ceremony)
Tell you what, you have to give it to Salt Lake City. They were absolutley polite and respectful to everyone, including Iran, which I thought was really classy.
Iran? I didn't even know Iran had a SUMMER olympic team, let alone a winter one...What kind of winter sports are there to do in Iran?
http://www.olympics.com/x/f/frame.htm?u=/news/slocmain_front.asp The Islamic Republic of Iran has two athletes: Alpine Skiing -KALHOR, Bagher Cross-Country Skiing -MIRHASHEMI, Seyed Mostafa No chance of winning though.
Hi guys... sorry I haven't been posting these days. (My computer at home is too slow to handle the board, so I can only post from the office; I'll get a decent computer when my dad brings me a new one for graduation.) Anyway, check out my <a href="http://ccwf.cc.utexas.edu/~jhurley/oly208.htm">page on the Opening Ceremonies</a> if you want to. I'm a big Olympic fan, and every year, I try to do writeups on the Olympics (mostly to make fun of them... makes it more interesting to watch ).
there's lots of places to ski in Tehran, it's very mountainous and snows like crazy. iran isn't just some huge desert.
