The game doesn't choose an injury than determine the length of it. It works by having an injury length (day to day,3-4 weeks, career ending, etc), than it almost randomly assigns a name to that injury. The fact is he would have had a career ending injury, it just happens that it was a blister, instead of a herniated disc.
I have to agree with Cat. The game does not always give out every tdev that change talent. I think that regardless what happen with Odalis that changing talent for players should not be done. You say that the game does not explain why Prior lost his talent, or put it out as a t dev, but the fact is it kinda did. He had an injury, the game decided he was now injury prone and not as talented against hits no more. If you still see this as a computer error it is the fact that it did not report the talent loss, but as I've said, the game does not always do this. This I've known all the way since haven was commish.
I'll tell you what happened with Prior. He decreased in everything EXCEPT hits, meaning he was still brilliant in hits. However, shortly after Chuck took over, he was showing up on the ratings report as a "Good" in hits but a "Brilliant" in Ks. If anything that should have been reversed to "Brilliant" in hits and "good" in Ks since he lost talent in Ks but not hits. I searched and searched to see if he had another talent decrease, this one being in hits, and never saw it. Chuck adjusted it, but he left the brilliant in Ks. He should change it to a good since that is what it declined to. Guys, injuries like this happen from time to time. I'm sure no one remembers or cares , but near the end of the 2003 season, Kenny Lofton who was the heart and soul of my team mysteriously quit playing with 2 weeks to go in the season. Granted, I had already wrapped up a playoff spot, but I never could find either in a boxscore, on my team injury page, or on the overall league injury page what had happened to him. I finally said something to Castor about it and he said that Lofton had hurt his ribs or something and it was just a glitch that OOTP never showed it to me. Well, this freak injury kept him out of the playoffs and that was significant. Remember, he had the season of his life by hitting 22 homers that year and had an OPS slightly over .900 Was it fair? Hell, no it wasn't. But I accepted it and moved on; however, I do think he could have made a difference against the Reds in the NLDS instead of Dave Kelton, who was a rookie and had to take his place. But that is part of it...the randomness. Same thing happened to IV with Xavier Nady in the second sim. X got hurt but the game never showed it to IV and Zac told him that he had some leg injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. Granted, it is rare when stuff like this happens, but the point is that it is NOT unprecedented.
Again Manny - this not take anything away from my point - that the game does not show all talent developments, that being declining or improving ones. I still do not think Prior should have been edited. On the other hand I do think Beckett needs to be edited - anyone watching this postseason will see that OOTP has been terribly unfair to him. Also when I heard that Pavano was to pitch in the WS I was scared, but he clearly is not as bad as the game put him.
Well, I disagree with you, heath on the game not showing all talent developments. Now, I do think that the game will not tell you if a player has declined in numerical ratings, but other than what happened with Prior, I have never in the 20+ seasons of OOTP seen a player go from "Brilliant" to "Good" or "Good" to "Average" without the game telling you. It DOES do that with injuries as I mentioned above with Lofton and Nady, but I don't think it does that with talent increases/decreases. If you can give me an example other than the Prior one, then maybe it will jog my memory and I can agree with you. Either way, as you know and most everyone else knows, regardless if Prior is a brilliant or good in hits, he is still an "8" in avoiding runs (he was a "9" at one point), and as long as he stays at an "8", being a brilliant or good in hits is insignificant to me.
I should have mentioned earlier that I would like to see what Zac's and Castor's take is on this situation, specifically: 1) Have they seen this before in what happened to Odalis? Player, fairly young, retires due to career-ending injury but OOTP does not show it? 2) Have they ever seen a player lose a talent in something whether it is avoiding hits, obtaining strikeouts, hitting homers, etc and OOTP does not report it?
1) Have they seen this before in what happened to Odalis? Player, fairly young, retires due to career-ending injury but OOTP does not show it? OOTP did show it though, I can bring up the profiles for retired players, and it said career ending injury, blistered finger.
Did not help me in the original sim when I lost Hampton and El Duque in the same season to carrer ending injuries. The only compensation I got was 4 million bucks
on both I have seen them happen before. The retirement engine is not perfect by amy means. There are often players that retire that the game never shows them as retired. It does occur that talent drops from injuries are not always reported.
I understand that regardless of cause and even the outrageous circumstance of it, the retiring of Odalis is what it is. An injury forced him into retirement. It does occur in the sports world, a day in the life really. Though, the observations, rulings, judgments, and opinions of the league are formed with a basis of competition. Competition which makes the league so rewarding. Now, understandably a teams acquisitions and departures via free agency, trade, or even injury are a part of the league and game itself. But, with the power to regulate so many aspects, and carry such thought into each action, perhaps the league is concentrating on the wrong areas. While the discussion of whether the injury is legitimate has brought valid points from both sides, I think a larger question may have been overlooked. Would the league really benefit without one of it's top young players and cy young award winners? Perhaps I’m overly biased, or just oversimplifying. Still, this does seem to be a decision that will affect the entire out of the park crew.
Well, that is a bit of oversimplification, sh*t happens, so to speak. And thus Odalis is staying retired, however, just like sh*t happens, boredom and a desire to compensate deano for the loss of OP also happens, and thus, he'll find a bonus in his farm system after the FA update.
