I don't give Kerry much credit at all. He should never have voted to give Bush the authorization. I join you in being disappointed in how Kerry has handeled the Iraq thing.

He did say that he would have voted the same way if knew then what he knows now about Iraq.

But Kerry also said that he wouldn't have done it at that time, without allies, without letting the inspectors finish their job, and only if it was really the last resort.

With a vote to authorize the President to use the troops and a President who was interested in real weapons inspections, WMD info, terrorism info, etc. it wouldn't have come down to an invasion. It's a round about way to get there I know, but it makes a little sense at least.

Also as you alluded to even if Kerry decided to go in, the actual reaons would have been on the table from the beginning, and it wouldn't have been bungled so horribly.

I guess we are talking about specifics, but I'm really offended by is the more general principle that war should only be a last resort used only when it's a necessary. And I believe that Kerry holds to that principle.

I knew it! I knew it! I knew the left would almost seem gleeful at the 1,000th death in Iraq because it would add more ammunition to their cause. I've got to agree with Bigtexxx on this one, this is truly sickening and morbid.

You can't fight a real ground war (not a fake war from 10,000 ft. like Clinton tried to fight in Kosovo with no ground troops) without casualties and when you think what a zoo that place is right now, our casualty rate is pretty damned low compared to just about any other war we've ever fought in. I know that every life lost is horrible, but we don't live in a perfect, utopian world where we have no enemies. We were going to have to take care of Iraq someday, one way or another.

One thousand American men and women have died for our country but, because it's a liability for a particular political candidate, we're not supposed to even acknowledge their deaths. Like they're not real people, just vague phantoms we support by just slapping a bumper sticker on our SUV. That's not support. Support is ensuring that their deaths were for a cause worthy of their ultimate sacrifice. Support is making sure that we don't send them into war unless it's absolutely necessary.

But there have been no parades for the fallen soldiers. No Presidential appearances. Not even pictures. Some families even have to pay for their dead family member's return. That's not support. That's exploitation.

But evidently it's more disgusting to *ACKNOWLEDGE* these "miscalculations" than the miscalculations themselves.

A parade? When and where do you want this to happen? While the fighting is still going on?

"Parade" is probably the wrong word. "Procession" is the word I was searching for. My apologies.

You've got to admit, deep down inside, the left is jubilant....they have something ELSE to hammer GWB, a leader just short of Hitler's tyranny.

I'm so happy that 1000 U.S. soldiers have died. When I was protesting the war before it began, it was all just a ruse. I didn't really care about the coming slaughter of U.S. soldiers and Iraqis. Secretly, I was hoping that we would go to war and that thousands of our soldiers would die, just so Bush would get a black eye. There you got it out of me. Now you know the truth. And it's not just me. ALL the protesters feel that way.

No and I'll tell you why. They didn't because they were trying to conceal their hatred of Bush and appear more.....nice and non-partisan. This is not a conspiracy theory, because I know (even though many of you will not admit it) that the 1,000-death mark gives you more "ammunition" in your crusade against the greatest danger the world has ever faced in GWB.

War is upon us...hello. Let me slap you upside the head! In this war, being on the offense is the right way to go...Is there a price to pay? Sure 1000 of our brave combatants have died in over a years time affliated with the war on terror...

But there is also a higher price by being defensive or doing nothing...Look at Russia, nearly 600 killed in one day...9/11/01 - over 3,000 dead in one day...

I'd rather have the cost of being on the offensive...

that football metaphor is so tired.

you talk about Russia and 9/11. If all our military is oveseas, what's gonna happen when we need them here to protect us from a similar situation? (what you would call defense I guess)
we know that they already have agents here.

maybe you could donate your gun collection to the military? :)

We were on the offense until Bush decided he was going to invade and occupy Iraq, come hell or high water. I thought he was doing a pretty good job, as a matter of fact. This has been said by several members of the liberal persuasion here time and again... Bush handled the immediate aftermath of 9/11 very well, and the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan was handled exremely well, with broad, worldwide support.

He threw that broad, worldwide support away when he chose to invade Iraq. I know you don't particularly care whether the world gives us their support or not, and please correct me if I got that wrong, but we are still getting wide support for the on-going conflict in Afghanistan. I believe that the French and the Germans have troops there, as well as several other countries, many members of NATO. So, when Kerry speaks of getting support like we have enjoyed in Afghanistan, he's going, in part, by the template Bush used there, but threw away to make war on Iraq. Pretty ironic, really.

As far as over 1000 American soldiers dying in Iraq... we could have just as easily lost that many in Afghanistan, if things had gone badly. It's the price of war, and a grim reminder not to make war unless all other avenues have been explored, and you are left with no other course. Sadly, Iraq didn't meet that test, and for making that decision, George W. Bush should be fired in November.

That's a horrible thing to accuse somebody of. I think we've seen by the threads in this bbs that we don't need another reason to criticize Bush. We certainly don't hold faulting Bush's policies with more regard than we do human life, especially those that are serving our country.

Remember those of us who were against the war didn't want these folks to die.

    You're pro-life right?
When your side says x-million babies are murdered every year by abortion does that mean you guys are gleeful about it? Does x-million make a better case for making abortion illegal than 32 a year? Yes.

How many soldiers and civillians have died due to the terrorism that the invasion of Iraq has caused. We barely ever heard of IIraqi terrorist, but as soon as we fingered the country, lo and behold, every other citizen is bombing a soldier.

dude, that is way harsh... you're kind of a D**K aren't you ?!

I read a couple of your other posts and thought you were a goof just trying to get people worked up, but after a while, I started to realize that you have some real issues going on. I mean really, doesn't the "angry white guy" routine get old after a while ? I understand how the whole right wing contract with America political movement worked when Clinton was in the White House, but my man, the Republicans control EVERYTHING (the House, Senate, White House, and Surpreme Court)... if $hit sucks - it MIGHT NOT be a stretch for some people to want to blame it on the ones who are in power.

But then we have people like you who think that anyone who questions your position is an Ameriacan Hating Liberal Scumbag. Where does that come from ? I mean, why are you STILL mad ? Maybe if you questioned the world a little more and tried to put things in perspective, you might enjoy the rest of your life. I mean at some point you will have to acknowledge to yourself that you are personally responsible for how unhappy you are and stop spitting so much hate on a BBS.

This was a post about war dead - no one is cheering that - least of all me. My father and grandfather served overseas - so I do not have a sense of humor about that stuff

Now, I am going back to the basketball board, to read the 1001st outrageous trade post of the summer

    have a nice day

Whether you supported the invasion or Iraq or opposed it I think we should all be saddened by this. These troops that died were all brave Americans who were doing their duty. It is inevitable and right that the number of deaths be part of the public debate but lets not forget that rightfully or wrongfully at the bottom line this is still one thousand people who have lost their lives. No matter what the circumstances that is something to be sad about.

The overall message of many of the people citing the 1,000 soldier statistic is that these troops were sent over there against their will. If you ask the actual heroes in uniform instead of pundits (on either side) you'll realize that the vast majority of soldiers ACTUALLY IN IRAQ agree with what we're doing. I know you lefties think you're speaking for the troops, but you're doing them a disservice by only giving half the truth.

Would many of them rather be home? Of course.

Do they still agree that America needs to be in Iraq? Overwhelmingly, the answer is yes (with many that don't agree I admit).

We have a volunteer army so nobody was SENT to Iraq. I wish both sides would treat this in a more diplomatic way. Nobody is sending children to die. They aren't children and they were sent for a reason (Whether or not you believe in it is your choice) but that reason wasn't for the sole purpose of dying.

I think that both sides of this argument need to realize that the troops arent the property of a political party. Democrats aren't the mouthpiece for the soldiers. Neither are republicans. If you want the truth about what's going on in Iraq, ask the men and women bravely fighting and risking their lives over there because they would know better than anyone.
