    fiction or nonfiction
    poetry or prose

Who created one outstanding work and never repeated it?

    Harper Lee
    Margaret Mitchell
    John Kennedy Toole

Even including people who had other works published, but they were never close to the same level as the seminal work. Like JD Salinger :( could be included in that, maybe.

On a side note, what about scholarly works in science, philosophy, math, etc. Who are the one seminal works wonders?

Donna Tartt's first book, "The Secret History," was published in 1992 to great acclaim. Then nothing.

But thanks to this thread, I checked Amazon and it turns out she has a new book (her first since "History") coming out in October. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm still in shock that his book hit #1 on the NY Times bestseller list.
