Maybe Ashcroft will have a new home in the Administration... ;)

    Sources: Colin Powell resigns

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has submitted his resignation to President Bush, a senior administration official told CNN.

Powell told his senior staff that he planned to stay on until a replacement was confirmed, State Department officials said.

State Department officials told CNN that Bush and Powell decided mutually that it was time for him to go.

Rumors have swirled about Powell's role in a second Bush administration, but neither the president nor the secretary had spoken publicly about his future.

Last week, when asked if he wanted Powell to stay on to oversee the Mideast peace process Bush told reporters: "I'm proud of my secretary of state. He's done a heck of a good job."

Powell told reporters that he had had several conversations with the president, but would not comment on what they said.

His ideas were never listened to anyway. I can't say it will make too much of a difference.

this shouldn't surprise anyone...he's being saying he would only serve one term for a very long time.

powell strikes me as intensely human...very relateable. a genuis i can't match, but a "real" person. one who actually gets tired of all the bullcrap.

thats what is so disapointing to me about him - he seems like such an stand-up guy, a guy I want to really like and respect, but the reality is that he has sacrificed his ethics on many occasions in the service of corrupt leaders - Iran-Contra and his UN speech on Iraqi WMD are two examples

I'm not suprised that Rod Paige also resigned. He did a crappy job as Superintendent of H.I.S.D. and an even worse job with this nation's schools.

What's surprising is how many people blindly praise this moron. Unfortunately, the story of how he "vastly improved" HISD hasn't garnered much interest. Sure, it's been on the national news, but people don't really give 2 sh*ts about it. People don't even care that the President had such high praise and even gave a cabinet position to a guy who's answer to the drop out problem was simply not classifying most of the drop outs as drop outs.

Regardless of what some of you may think of Powell, and I have my problems with some of his actions as well, the truth is that he was one of the moderate voices behind the scenes in the Bush Administration. I don't see Powell leaving as a net plus at all, unless he's replaced by a genuine moderate Republican, or a respected conservative Democrat. Does anyone see that happening??

I hope the rumor isn't true, and I could care less about that stuff you were throwing out there. Rice is over her head already... as Sec-State, she would be in poo even deeper. In my opinion, of course.

Actually Condi puts the lie to a lot of things just like she did with the aluminum tubing reasons for not wanting networks to show Bin Laden tapes, the 9-11 commission.

Policy wise Condi in that position won't make a difference. But in diplomacy with other nations it will make a difference. Nobody wants to have someone totally dishonest being the person who deals diplomatically with nations of the world.

As for the racist sexist homophobe things, this doesn't have much to do with that. It does show that anyone who falls in line won't have race or sex held against them. Anyone who actually pushes for an agenda towards equality or champions the causes that would benefit female employees, groups that have been discriminated and are still discriminated against, or equal rights for homosexuals most certainly will not be promoted. But that's true of white males who advocate those things as well.

I also dont' think most people feel all Republicans are racists, homophobes, sexists etc. Just that this president's agenda is at least one of those.

    so condi's now gay? :D

anyway, i don't think republicans dislike women or blacks, they just don't like black democrats and women democrats. however, please don't tell me that a black person is more likely to get respect in a red state than a blue state, pulease
