They're pretty great, yes. They'll be at Mary Jane's (*vomits shards of metal*) in a few weeks.

I probably won't go. I've seen enough talented bands' music torn to pieces by their sound system.

So, the deal is that if you can't find a decent bass player now, just don't have one.

This band would be ruined by a bass player.

He might not, but I don't like their music at all.

Hate is too strong of a word....I need a phrase... I "never owned any of their stuff, never will, and change the channel when they come on the radio" the Doors music.

Yes, but not because they didn't have a bass player.

Technically, the Doors used a session bassist in the studio but toured without one. The organist did, however, play the bass lines on the organ.

I just never understood the appeal of Jim Morrison. Lots of people call him a genius, a poet, a prophet, etc., and that's fine, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I just saw him as nothing more than a drunk, in love with the sound of his own voice, and if that's what I wanted, all I have to do is sit at the bar at Kay's Lounge and it's all around me. :D

I tend to agree with you. I don't really see where people are calling him a great poet/artist/genius or anything. I am a big Doors fan, but he's really just a decent lyricist who might have actually had a tremendous amount of literary talent if he didn't spend all his time wasted.

A friend of mine saw me play with some other guys and said we sounded like the Black Keys. Have yet to check out their stuff yet.

I kinda like the Doors, but I do so really in spite of Morrison. I do kinda like the Black Keys, so I was considering going to that show.

Actually, if one of the two must go, I prefer it be the drummers ;)

Seriously, I did always find it difficult to find good drummers and bass players. Typically the drummer wa the rat-a-tat type and if he was REALLY GOOD he was too difficult to be in a band with from a personality stand point. Not stuck up or anything, just gonzo.

Good bass players are like gold and usualy solid and reliable people to have in your band.

It does seem like the success of White Stripes is spawning a lets just go without a bass player attitude but I don't see it lasting.

Black Keys = Poppy Trash Can Blues. Which is a bit ironic unto itself. For those lucky enough to live in Austin...April 29th at Emo's.

It's why I can have gigs anytime I want them. If you are a decent player who picks things up quickly and can play a variety of styles, forget it.

I find too that I'm one of the rare breed who, although I love jazz, funk, fusion, etc. and have played it over the years, really loves to play rock bass and I'm not a converted guitar player. That makes me in a tiny little minority. :)

I went to the Houston Music Roundtable 2-year anniversary thing tonight at the volcano and came out with a handful of business cards and phone numbers. It helps that Ian from Drop Trio pimps me out to everyone though. :D

Art always requires context. To appreciate Morrison's nihilism you kind of had to be there.
