With the Clippers telling Kareem Abdul-Jabbar his services are no longer needed, is that any indication that Olowokandi is not in the Clippers plans for the future? Just a thought, but if the Clipper were to go with another center, a la Mihm, you would think they could still use Kareem as a mentor. The Hall of Fame center had interviewed with several other teams before breaking into the coaching ranks with the Clippers. He was expected to help Michael Olowokandi, the team's 7-foot center, improve his game. "Kareem called me and said, 'They told me that my services were no longer needed,' " Johnson told the Times. "Kareem didn't say much else, but he wished me luck in the future." ------------------
Typical Clippers. They finally get a guy with common sense and great basketball knowledge and they let him go. It's just a circus over there with all the clowns they have annually running this team. I hope we could get him, but I know a lot of members of this BBS disagree. I'd give Cato for him in a second. This would work I think because the Clippers are under the cap and could take Cato's salary, and we could use all the cap room we could get. Don't forget that Kandi was the #1 pick in the draft. This guy does have potential. A year's tutorial under Hakeem could do this kid a world of good. At worst, I think he's equal to Cato, and he also comes at a much cheaper price. I'd try and pick him up. ------------------ Come back Popeye!!!
Olowakandi is not a good player. Kareem may not have been let go for any reason other than his personality. I have heard interviews and commentary from friends of his. They all state Kareem is a very private, short, and even rude person at times. There is nothing wrong with being yourself, but maybe he is not a player's coach. Who knows. The Clippers need something though, and in my opinion, their anxiousness to get out of the NBA cellar is making them impatient. They may not have given Kareem a real shot at it. He was not on their staff very long. ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
I'd prefer to keep Cato over trading for Olowokani. For a few, brief moments I thought it would be a good deal for the Rockets, but I finally came to my senses and realized it really wouldn't make us any better. I just have a feeling that Cato will rebound(no pun intended) from last season. ------------------ We need some meat in the post!
Calling Kandi a bad player isn't quite right, but I'd think he's a better than average CENTER (due to all the garbage that represents a center these days). I also think acquiring him for just about anything short of our #9 pick, Francis, Mobley, Anderson, CATO (Kandi/Cato would make a formidable center duo), and of course Hakeem, would be a near definite plus. ------------------ Rockets fans wanted at hoopsboards.com Draft Chat, NBA Chat, Team Chat, and more!
NIKEstrand, If you re-read my post, I didn't say Olowakandi was bad, I said he wasn't good....there is a difference. His numbers aren't GOOD. Actually, they are no better than average. His rebounding is pretty decent, but the rest is suspect. If you look at centers with comparable minutes, he doesn't rank too high. ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
Lets just say the Clippers like Keith Closs more than Kandi, that should tell you about Kandi's future. ------------------ Check out the new and improved Draftsource.net

I didn't say it made sense either! ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
HOOP-T: I know, I just didn't feel like typing a few extra words, hehe. Who wouldn't love a 7'2'' guy with a fro? For the "fun of it, here's a list of starting centers, who I would NOT take over Kandi (note, I'm not looking at numbers): Potapenko McIlvaine, or whoever they throw out in NJ Amaechi Jahidi White Bulls center (Purdue or whoever they may have) Cavs center (who do they have in place of Z?) Mikki Moore Nesterovic (T-Wolves) Shawn Bradley Olden Polynice Bryant Reeves Longley Adonal Foyle Arguable: Ervin Johnson People who have no place being a center: Davis (Toronto) Baker or Grant (Seattle...not sure who they put on the center) That's 13 centers IMO he's definitely better than, and if you throw out the 2 out of position centers, that's 13 out of 26 (29-his own team-2 non starting center teams) plus one arguable. That puts him right in the middle of the pack, but as I said, he'd make a pretty nice tandem of the future with Cato, and make a good looking trio along with Hakeem. ------------------ Rockets fans wanted at hoopsboards.com Draft Chat, NBA Chat, Team Chat, and more!
Doesn't Kandi have some problems with his knees? I remember his agent said his knees were only at only 50% and that was the reason Kandi missed a practice back when he skipped practice this season after Mo Taylor called him out for bad play. The health of his knees would definitely be a factor in any decision I would make as a GM to trade for him. ------------------
MAN, there are a lot of bad centers in the league huh???? I might take Shawn "I am a deer lost in the headlights" Bradley over Kandi. I am not even sure why. ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
