Ollie played more minutes for Cleveland than Pike did for us. They make basically the same money. Ollie fills a premium position. Pike sat on the bench. Ollie's missed a grand total of 1 game over the past 3 seasons. Pike missed 33 games last season. xiki-I don't think incentives would be required. The Bob's incentive for facilitating is getting to make 2 "free" picks without actually using any cap. They have to make a minimum of 14 picks. Hank McDowell- You don't know how to add. Ollie is 31 right now, he's turning 32 in late December. He'll be 35 when is contract is over. To put that in perspective, Piatkowski turns 34 in September. He'll also be 35 when his contract is over. Woe is the Rockets for trading such a spring chicken.
Why would Bobs not expect a premium for facilitating the deal? Beyond 'two 'free' picks. Can their TE's be traded for each other to make the deal? Would that give Bobs two 2.75 or so TEs?
Why the heck would the Rockets want Ollie and the rest of his 4 year $12 million contract. To put things into perspective, McInnis who is just as good if not better, makes the same money for only 1 more year. Ollie would make almost as much as Bobby Jackson, the best backup PG in the league. The Rockets screwed up giving Pike a 3 year deal when they should have done something similiar to Denver and Voshon Lenard (who was a solid contributer - unlike Pike). The last thing we need is to exacerbate bad contract with 2 more years of another bad contract for a mediocre player.
So they both have bad contracts, but Pike's runs two more years, Ollie's four more years? That means if we keep Pike (or if he gets picked by Charlotte), we have one less bad contract in two years, but if we make the deal we have two more years of a bad contract than if we just kept Pike?
ollie isn't breaking the bank. he has a nice sized contract...it is just longer than what we would want. not a big deal to me at all. its not like we will be under the cap anytime soon to go after FA's...
If we trade for T-Mac then I say that we make the Ollie deal. We would need another PG anyway with Steve gone. And also if T-Mac was here presumably our roster would be set and we would only need a few tweaks. But if the T-Mac deal falls through, then I say no to Ollie because we don't know which way our team wants to go and we would need the flexibility. Ollie's contract runs longer than Mo-T's and when Mo's contract ends, we would actually have some cap space. So I think the Ollie deal should be directly tied with the T-Mac deal.
even if we don't get tmac, we have no back-up for steve. we could use a guy that doesnt turn the ball over too, and adds some vet leadership. i wouln't count on mo being here long enough for his contract to run out either...my guess was he would be the first to go, but now with the tmac, and ollie deals still pending he might be the last to go.
IF the rockets are able to acquire McGrady then i don't care who our point guard is, as long as he can take care of the ball, knows how to pass and can hit a jumpshot. Whether it be Barry, Fisher or Ollie. Doesn't matter
Kevin Ollie is no, I repeat, NO BETTER than Charlie Ward. And Ward can be had for the veterans exception. Neither played much last year, but at least JVG is familiar with and likes one of them. I remember Ollie from his days in Philly. He's a consistent performer. At a consistently low level. If you want a big, defensive minded point that can't shoot, go with Eric Snow (this must be the 50th "bring Snow to Houston post I've written")
After all of the players pulled out of the draft last week, this is one of the weakest drafts in memory. See Today's Chronicle for an example: With so many mid- to late-first-round and second-round underclassmen and international players pulling out of the draft, teams picking late (the Rockets' only pick is 55th) were stuck in the wrong part of a weak draft. The Rockets had gone into draft preparations knowing Rockets owner Leslie Alexander would approve a deal to virtually buy a first-round pick to make up for the loss of this season's pick, which was sent to Utah in the Glen Rice salary-cap deal. But with last week's changes in the draft's depth, it no longer makes sense to spend much for a first-round pick who in other seasons would be selected in the second round. This week's draft has been downgraded to awful. Expect seven or eight high school players to go in the top 20. Teams such as the Boston Celtics, looking to unload picks, could be more agreeable during the draft if they choose a high school prospect early and are in the position of taking another high schooler later in the first round. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/2637378
makes sense, but I think Pike can be valuable as a spotup 3-point shooter in situations...i'd like to see him atleast one more year to accomodate to the system..pure shooters are a rarity in todays NBA...
Thanks for the corrections, guys. What was I thinking? Yeah - this deal stinks. You guys rock with the homework.
if the deal is via charlotte doesn't that mean they waive him after picking him from the Cavs and then we don't get that Mooch like contract....
Actually, this draft went from weak to terrible, now that a bunch of players have withdrawed. Besides Okafor, teams aren't expecting to improve much from this draft. Even the #1 contendor in Dwight Howard isn't expected to help much this year. This draft isn't about talent, its about potential.
If that's the way it works, great. I assume that Bobs get TEs from Rox and Cavs, and both teams pay the freight of the contracts.
Is this a rumor or an actual deal that will go through? The title leads to be as an actual deal going through...
