I know, but it still seems like their "new" album to me. Kind of like Van Halen's 1984. Or Rush's Signals. Or U2's The Joshua Tree. Seriously, I can't explain why I feel that way. Maybe because I was really pumped in high school when these albums first came out.
I understand what you're saying... too few bands and too many groups these days. Too few musicians and too many dancers. The big thing for me... and many of the bands I liked in my youth helped contribute to this in ways large and small... is the focus on Rock and the ignoring of Roll. Stevie Ray and U2's Rattle and Hum were, I think, the last gasps of Rock and Roll. Even the stuff that's supposed to be blues-based these days comes off as a bit too clean for my tastes.
Some good suggestions already but I will list mine: Neil Young WITH Crazy Horse - "Cowgirl in the Sand", "Down by the River", "Cinnamon Girl", "Cortez the Killer", "Powderfinger", "F*ckin' Up" (just to name a few) Neil Young SOLO - "Southern Man", "Ambulance Blues", "Keep On Rockin' in the Free World", "Like an Inca", "Like a Hurricane", "Touch the Night", "Hippie Dream", "I'm the Ocean" David Bowie - "Rebel Rebel", "Panic in Detroit", "The Man Who Sold the World", "Moonage Daydream", "Ziggy Stardust", "Ashes to Ashes", "Life on Mars", "Changes", "Heroes", "Teenage Wildlife" Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Now I'm Here", "Sheer Heart Attack", "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions", "Don't Stop Me Now", "The Prophet's Song", "Sail Away Sweet Sister", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Under Pressure" Pink Floyd - "Fearless", "Echoes", "Time", "Money", "Us And Them", "Have a Cigar", "Welcome to the Machine", "Dogs", "Pigs (Three Different Ones)", "Young Lust", "Run Like Hell", "Hey You", "Mother", "Don't Leave Me Now" I'll stop on that but will add one final song and it is by the Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter".
Cream- swablr Roky Erickson and The Aliens- I think up demons Electric Light Orchestra- Livin Thing Grand Funk Railroad- American Band All of Zeppelin I The Who- My Generation and You better you bet
Agreed. Jesus, I don't know where to begin. Some of the stuff listed as "old rock" in the OP is barely 10-15 years old. That's not old unless you're talking about pets, cars, or computers. Just....listen to the suggestions in this thread: Zeppelin (all of it....give them time), Sabbath (all of it, even the stuff without Ozzy), The Who (all of it), Hendrix (all of it), Pink Floyd (all of it). And don't let ANYONE tell you that anything from the '80's isn't any good. When I think of hard rock and metal in that time period, I believe it goes back to the late '70's with bands like Motorhead, Rainbow, Van Halen, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden leading to bands like Def Leppard, Dokken, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, and a few others. This was also Ozzy's solo heyday as well as (Ronnie James) Dio. "Hair bands" started after these were all well-established, simply copying a formula that was proven to be ridiculously successful. It is unfortunate that these bands get lumped in with the irrelevant "hair bands." A lot of good music gets overlooked. Queensryche is another one not to be missed, and is a perfect example of listening to the WHOLE album. You'll miss a ton if you don't. "Operation: Mindcrime" is a great place to start with them. And that same era was followed by bands like Metallica, Megadeth (who I HIGHLY recommend if you don't have any of their stuff....just get ALL their albums. You won't be disappointed), Pantera, and Guns 'n Roses. I've got to agree with the folks who mentioned listening to the whole album. Even if the LP is dead (not saying it is or isn't), it sure as hell wasn't dead back then. I'd recommend doing some reading on rock & roll. Google something like "greatest hard rock and/or metal bands and/or albums." You'll find a ton of stuff. Then read up why people think those are so great. Its a good place to start, anyway.
Crosby, Still and Nash - 4 Way Street (get Deckerd's vibe) Mitch Ryder and the Wheels - Best Of (get your sweat on) Moody Blues - Days Of Futures Past Free - Free Jethro Tull - Aqualung John Hiatt - Slow Turning Savoy Brown - Street Corner Talking Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain salad Surgery Little Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now The Allman Brothers Band - Live At The Fillmore For your Stones, get Sticky Fingers although Let It Bleed is my personal favorite Off the top of my head with the 5 minutes I have.....
Hey, albums are great. I have plenty. Put simply, these "segments of the arc of their careers" needn't conform to the 12-song, 45 minute format any longer. Why not shorter EP-like releases? Why not collosal triple albums? Why not release a song or two per month rather than 12 every three years? Maybe none of those experiments will work as well. Maybe they'll work much better. The point is, it's a shakeup. Recorded music isn't suffering at all, it's easier to have people hear your stuff now than ever. It's simply the consumer-oriented, retail-approved package that's dying out.
the outlaws - green grass and high tides jj cale - ride me high derek and the dominos - why does love have to be so sad, gotta get better in a little while pantera - walk
Blue Oyster Cult- Fire of Unknown Origin Cheap Trick- Dream Police The Kinks- Give the People What They Want Lynyrd Skynyrd- Street Survivors The Smithereens- Especially For You Jethro Tull- Warchild The Pretenders- The Pretenders The Doors- Morrison Hotel Blind Faith- Blind Faith Van Halen- Women and Children First Yes- The Yes Album Pete Townshend- Empty Glass Foghat- Fool For the City Dire Straits- Making Movies Black Sabbath- Heaven and Hell Bad Company- Desolation Angels Heart- Little Queen The Beatles- Magical Mystery Tour The Cars- Panorama The Who- Quadrophenia Any one of those is a good introduction to old school rock. If I had to put together a "greatest hits," it would just really need to revolve around "hell," I would think, since we are talking about the "devils" music: 1. Gonna Raise Hell- Cheap Trick 2. Heaven and Hell- Black Sabbath 3. Highway to Hell- AC-DC 4. Hell in a Bucket- Grateful Dead 5. Hot Rails to Hell- Blue Oyster Cult 6 Hells Bells- AC-DC 7. Run Like Hell- Pink Floyd 8. Heaven and Hell- The Who 9. Hell Bent for Leather- Judas Priest 10. Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers- ZZ Top Put those 10 songs on a CD and you have the ultimate rock and roll.
Here I am going to report on some songs I checked out. Gimme Shelter-Rolling Stones. I didnt like this one Trampled Underfoot-Led Zepplin. I liked this one Dazed and Confused-Led Zepplin. I liked it when it would speed up but otherwise no. Heaven and Hell-Black Sabbath. BIG PLUS Helter Skelter-Beatles. Im not sure on this one, I underestimated them but Im still impartial on it. Maybe it will grow on me. Archilles Last stand-Metallica. I tried to download this but it wouldnt work. Also the way I like to listen to music, is that it needs to motivate me or pump me up say for a game or to workout. Stuff like Phatom of the Opera, Ride the Lightning, I dont want to stop, and breadfan. And thanks everyone for the suggestions Ill try and get around to all of them but right now football, physics, and pre cal are kicking my ass, got no time. And to the person who recommended Breadfan, GREAT song. There are 2 versions though one by metallica and one by budgie. I personally like the metallica one more because i love metallica.
Ok so it wasnt archilles it was achilles lol. But try not to confuse me like that whoever recommended that song. I got it to download once i got the right title and this one i definitely like and its easily my favorite Zepplin song. Nothing slow it.
i was about to tell you that it isn't a metallica song... and no love for gimme, huh? did you at least recognize it? try "cant you hear me knocking" by the rolling stones.... one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time, and just a flat out rocking song.
Dude i have no idea what you are trying to say there? lol. And i just tried that song, im impartial to it. I like parts of it and dislike other parts. If you want to hear a good guitar solo listen towards the end of ONE by metallica.
you spelled it wrong, but you also attributed it to the wrong band. and one was the first metallica song i ever liked.
man, i thought this thread was about to go 3 pages without any mention of Megadeth...phew. see sig. Megadeth is still putting out hardcore albums. Definitely pick them up.
lol i get that now. but i was like what the hell does this mean lol??? "and no love for gimme, huh? did you at least recognize it?"
