I didn't see this mentioned, but potentially relevant is the fact that Garner had Wheeler warming in the ninth, indicating he would be the closer today had it been needed. On the other hand, before the Friday game was out of reach, he had Wheeler warming for the 8th inning, indicating Qualls would be the closer. So, it definitely appears that this is going to be a revolving door situation at closer and there may not have a current favorite. Which, yes... is exactly what Garner said a few days ago. But, there are certainly many circumstances where a manager's word shouldn't be taken at face value.
5 quality starts in which he gave up 3 or fewer runs (out of 8 starts total) is not exactly terrible.
I was at yesterday's game. Awesome stuff. Thanks, Andy, for the great Mother's Day present for my wife. Lance is so much fun to watch hit. Even from the right side where his swing is far from pretty, it's just great to see.
What AcesHigh said... and the fact that Andy is such a freakin competitor, you know he'll work his ass off to correct whatever mistakes he had been making in those couple awful starts that inflated his ERA. He STILL talks about how game 6 of the 2001 World Series HAUNTS him, as he was absolutely bombed by the D-backs in a game the Yankees could have won the championship in. There was a big revelation that he might have been tipping his pitches, and that bugged him to no end. Andy's a perfectionist... to the 9th power... probably the only guy on our team that is that way (until Roger comes back). Even when he threw the shutout yesterday, he was sort of upset at himself for not having thrown one earlier as a Stro... that is just the sort of obsessive-compulsiveness that has allowed him to survive in the big-leagues (with below specatular "stuff") for so long. Once again... I wouldn't worry about Andy.
i know, i'm just saying in two of his three starts prior to yesterday, he didn't exactly look sharp. course then again, it all looks bad i guess when your team is in a severe slump and your starting pitchers actually have a bad start or two.
