Umm, yea... That's why I mentioned the talent difference. Backe had a high compete level. That was the only thing I was getting at in the comparison.
Aren't you the one that made the hideous thread about the Rockets having no shot at the playoffs, what was it, last season? Yeah, your opinion is forever devalued...sorry, bud.
Boy, I know were still on the lower level talent wise amongst the other teams in the NL, but our pitching is sure encouraging. It started out rough for Myers, but 7 innings with 4 ER's, I'll take that from him. Only thing I didn't agree with tonight was taking Tommy out in the 6th. I understand we had a runner ISP, but it's not like Cory has been killing the ball. Tommy also had quite a few key plays in the field before that. Not to mention, (The main reason I had a problem with it), we basically wasted two pinch hitters in that inning. Why not just pinch hit with Kaz there if you were wanting to put him in the next inning anyways. Instead of using Cory, then having to take Kaz off the bench and plug him in at short. Oh well, wins a win! Hopefully the St. Louis Norris shows up tomorrow. Going to need his command against that line up.
Yea, that was me. Nobody is right all the time and I consider myself to be right less than most people. I just state my opinions like every other poster. Nobody has to agree with them.
The pitching is what will make this team watchable, crossing my fingers, because the offense will not have to many 7 run games. Saying that, the offense can be mediocre enough to at least help out the pitching some what now that Puma is back. I actually liked pinch hitting for Tommy in the 6th, kind of reminded me of Garner, with those gut feelings, instead of going strictly by the book. GO STROS
If Myers keep this up, he just might be valuable enough to get a decent prospect come the trade deadline. At least that's what I'm hoping for, anyway.
Before anyone gets crazy here, 7 innings / 4 runs translates into a 5.14 ERA - that's below average and pretty close to what Brian Moehler had last year (5.4). He'll have to pitch more like he did last week than what he did in his 1st or 3rd starts to have any trade value.
No but a 4.05era might, if can keep it around 4 and pitch roughly 7 innings a start then teams will come calling.
I think Myers is the least of our concerns. He represents possibly the one clear upgrade (at least in terms of talent) over who he is replacing from last season. He gave up 4 hits and 2 runs before recording his 1st out of the game then ended up pitching 7 innings. Sometimes it's not all about the numbers, even for me. I like Myers' compete level. I don't know if he'll pitch to his potential this season or if he'll stay healthy, mentally or physically, but if nothing else, I do like his attitude on the mound.
Berkman comes back and the offense has its best game by far. Pitching though is still what has to lead this team, and I like our rotation. The Myers signing was the one move this offseason that I really liked. It really just depends on if Bud Norris can continues to look like a good middle of the rotation starter, and if Paulino can have a few of those dominate outings he had last season, or if he can just be more consistent.
completely random question here, but how come it seems certain teams get a huge amount of day games? (like the Cubbies). While all our games in Houston are typically at night? Is it due to the fans? I don't get it.
I think because of the tradition of day games at Wrigley. I prefer night games on the weekdays. I also think it can get very nasty in Chicago at night. Much better weather during the day.
Because the neighborhood the Cubs play in have restrictions on the amount of night games that can be played. But every team plays night games on a regular basis.
I want to say Chicago has an ordiance were the Cubs can only play a certain amount of night games. They use to play all day games till they built the light stands in 88 I believe and only recently did they get a few more night games. WCoast teams play a lot of day games because of the great weather during the day I believe.
