Peavy would be the bomb- and put fans in seats. I understand the reasoning behind trading Tejada, but I predict that if they do, he'll put up great numbers elsewhere, likely for a contender (contenders can afford him). I didn't think he was a bust last year- inconsistent, yes, but won some games for us, kicked butt and hustled in the All Star game, had a great clubhouse personality (who expected THAT!?) and generally performed solidly. Wiggington had his career year after many barely holding onto a roster spot. I predict he returns to form as a decent, hard-working and hustling player with slightly above average offense. He is not worth the money at this point, though, and we should get whatever we possibly can for him. Let's get Peavy! That would be a HUGE move for Drayton- CF
one of the Chron dudes with a blog went through some reasoning on that yesterday.. I think they said he might be asking 10 mil per or something.. ?
Chris Burke was non-tendered. Now that Loretta signed with LA (I think), perhaps Chris could provide some depth/utility.
With all these great offseason moves so far i'm almost willing to give up on the 2009 Astros now in December of2008!
"Astros sign Michaels The Astros' pursuit for a fifth outfielder may have come to a conclusion on Monday when they signed Jason Michaels to a one-year contract worth $750,000. "Jason fits the profile of the type of role player that we like to have," said Wade. "He's a solid player with good makeup and he brings another veteran presence to the Astros. He can play all three outfield positions, can, if needed, go out there and play on a regular basis, and can give you a professional at-bat in a tough situation." Michaels, 32, hit .224 with eight home runs and 53 RBI in 123 games with Cleveland and Pittsburgh in 2008. In 50 pinch-hit appearances last season, Michaels hit .200 and recorded 13 RBI, ranking third in the Majors in RBI as a pinch-hitter. A versatile defender, Michaels played all three outfield positions in 2008, including 43 games in right field, 34 games in left field and eight games in center field. Michaels is a career .271 hitter with 45 home runs and 247 RBI. He owns a career batting average of .286 against left-handed pitching. A veteran of eight Major-League seasons, Michaels has spent time with Philadelphia (2001-05), Cleveland (2006-08) and Pittsburgh (2008). With the addition of Michaels, the Astros 40-man roster now stands at 38 players." Alyson Footer http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/astros_sign_michaels.html
What? Another tool signed from the scrap-yard! Jeez this team is going to absoluetly suck this season! I have nothing too look forward too with this team and have zero confidence in the front office! Boy how far this team has fallen from the WS just a few years ago!!!!
Abercrombie showed some flashes last year but he has a career 123 - 23 KK to BB ratio and an average in the low .200s. No reason to get worked up over this move. They simply signed a 5th outfielder at a relatively cheap price. In other words, if he doesn't work out, they won't lose much by cutting him.
I'm not worked up about it...just a bit dumbfounded. Abercrombie could cool MMP with the wind generated from his swing-and-misses. But he played decent defense at all 3 spots, has fantastic speed, and when he does make contact...ball go far.
Furcal signed with the Braves.. opening the door for them to move Escobar in a deal for Peavy (which they were previously unwilling to do). The other option is moving him to 2B and Kelly Johnson to the OF.. but I don't know if they're willing to put the somewhat light-hitting (for a COF) Johnson in the OF as a full-time player given the rest of that lineup..
ok strike that.. Furcal back to the Dodgers. Guess that other report was premature (so Peavy to the Braves is back to whatever it was before..basically nothing for now)
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=497578 Padres CEO: Peavy likely to remain in San Diego After failing to work out a trade with the Braves and Cubs, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson told The San Diego Union-Tribune it appears the Padres will begin the 2009 season with ace Jake Peavy in their starting rotation. However, Alderson left the door slightly open for a trade, telling the newspaper, "We are no longer actively pursuing any trade for Jake, which is not to say someone won't approach us." The cost-cutting Padres would prefer to shed Peavy's contract -- the righthander will make $11 million in the 2009 season -- but that effort has been complicated by the fact that Peavy has a no-trade clause and has expressed a desire to remain in the National League.
yeah I had heard that.. I just thought the Furcal-to-the-Braves move would be a precursor to a Peavy move with the crowded/talented infield that it would have resulted in. But I guess that's also saying that the Astros won't be getting Peavy even if the Braves aren't.. so doesn't matter.. damn, I want something good to happen..
its gotta suck for padres fans to know theyre gonna lose a younge ace like peavy bc their owner is going through a rough divorce and has to sell the team. That would make me quit being a fan
