(only fearless because I made it after the game was over )

That much was evident Friday afternoon to everybody at Wrigley Field. Nonetheless, he didn't realize it was a career outing until a group of Astros teammates clustered around a television set in the visitors' clubhouse shortly after his complete-game victory. The hoots and hollers got louder and louder as Miller's strikeouts were replayed. When the tally was made, Miller was as surprised as anybody to realize he had collected a career-high 14 strikeouts, including three welcoming back Sammy Sosa from the disabled list. Miller was in such a zone, he didn't bother counting strikeouts while holding Sosa and Co., to two hits. He focused, instead, on the most important facts: a 9-1 victory to open a key three-game series and put the Astros within one game of the first-place Cubs in the National League Central. "I knew my (previous career high) was 13 strikeouts," he said. "I didn't know how many I had today until after the game. I really didn't know. I knew I was getting a lot early and late, but I really wasn't for sure." Miller's fifth career complete game and first two-hitter of the year was a tremendous boost for Jimy Williams' club on many fronts. The bullpen received its first day off of the season, snapping the Astros' 66-game streak without a complete game, dating to Miller's complete game Sept. 15 against the Cardinals. "Any time you see a pitcher have a performance like that, it's awesome," closer Billy Wagner said. "It was impressive. I tell you what, it impressed guys around here. That's what we've expected from him. If we get him and Roy (Oswalt) going, we'll be rolling." It's no secret the Astros' rotation is off to a slow start, but Miller hopes his third victory of the season gets him back on track with Oswalt coming off the 15-day disabled list today. "I think it's good to get this one under our belts," Miller said. "Let's see if we can score like that the next couple of days. Especially with Roy coming back, that's going to be a big lift for us, too. If he comes back and throws the way he can (today), that just makes our team a little bit better." Miller (3-6) took the mound hoping to redeem himself after giving up eight hits and five runs over five innings in his previous outing, a 7-3 loss to the Cubs last Sunday. "Five innings isn't going to cut it, but I feel a little bit better," Miller said. "I think I can build on this one." The Astros, 6-5 on their current stretch of 13 consecutive games against the Cubs and Cardinals, took a 1-0 lead on Morgan Ensberg's home run in the second. Miller's teammates took control with four runs in the fourth against lefthander Shawn Estes (5-4). Lance Berkman began the rally with a one-out single to center. Ensberg walked, and Brian Hunter loaded the bases with an infield single to third. Brad Ausmus followed with a three-run double, snapping his 0-for-9 slump on the trip. Ausmus scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch. "I gave up a bases-clearing double to Ausmus, and that's pretty much what happened," Estes said after giving up seven hits and eight runs with three walks over 4 1/3 innings. "The way Miller pitched, that was enough." Estes failed to finish the fifth as the Astros scored four more runs on a two-run double by Hunter, an RBI single by Berkman and an error on Ausmus' fielder's choice grounder to short. Corey Patterson scored the Cubs' run with a home run in the fifth, but Miller didn't give up another hit the rest of the way. Chicago's only other hit came in the third on Damian Miller's one-out single to right. "It was all about pitching and (Miller) was on," Sosa said. "You got to get ready; he's throwing 96 mph." Ausmus, who entered Friday hitting .196 overall, agreed with Sosa's assessment. "I didn't know (about Miller's career-high 14 strikeouts) until I saw it on TV after the game," Ausmus said. look at the numbers: maddux: 4-5, 4.90 era schilling: 4-3, 3.04 era johnson: 1-2, 6.94 era miller has a better era that 2 of these 3 guys, its just that the astros havent been scoring much in his games. also i said that if he keeps pitching the way he did, he will probably go one one of his annual 10 or 12 game winning streaks and be a candidate for the award.
You do realize that the pitching matchups are already listed in the first post and that by adding those images you are using up bandwidth for every person that opens this thread?
Kevin Millwood, Matt Morris, Woody Williams, and Kevin Brown might have something to say about it. But yes, if he has a 14K, 2 hit CG in every start from now on, sure a Cy Young is very likely.
