I'm going to soften my previous stance and say that there was some pretty good stuff out of the 80's but there was a ton of crap and a lot of what I saw on the first few pages of this was crap. Rick Springfield? George Micheal? Is this what we even want to remember about the 80's? I think I agree somewhat with Jeff about digital technology bringing down music. While I think its great we have this much technology people are still really trying to get a handle on how to use it. The biggest problem I see with it is the propensity to overproduce. Slickness and fullness of sounds start to take more importance over rawness and vitality that a lot of music, particulary Rock, is about. This trend isn't new and the same can be said with what happened in the late 50's and early 60's with R & B and country where people started loading basic songs with strings and choruses and any other musical accompianment they could get their hands on. I also agree with Jeff too that MTV has hurt music to an extent by elevating people who probably have no right to be considered musicians, take Paula Abdul and any of her progeny. Good looking dancers who without synthesizers couldn't even stay in key.
You're probably thinking of Oingo Boingo - Who Do You Want To Be Today Bullock Rothers - Harley David Son of a B***h -- droxford
No----it's more clubby. Woman vocals. I'm searching. The beginning starts off instrumental...kind of asian sounding.
Asian sounding? No one ever did anything like that in the 80's. I mean, it wasn't like Chinese t-shirts and kung fu shoes were popular or anything.
man, 80s music is the best. tryin to only pick somewhat obscure songs... The The - Giant, Uncertain Smile Book of Love - Boy, I touch roses Depeche Mode - Fly on the windscreen Joy Division - Dead Souls Sisters of Mercy - Driven like the snow Cocteau Twins - Sugar Hiccups, Lorelei OMD - Statues, She's Leaving Erasure - Don't Dance, Hideaway Celebrate the Nun - Will you be there
No--more obscure. You would definitley not have heard it unless you were a big time club goer (if that's a word).
hmmm....those are the only lyrics I can remember. It's kind of repetitive---although I'm positive there are more lyrics. It's on one of my compilations cd's. I'm trying to find out from the guy who made it for me. The instrumental beginning sounds like they are banging a xylophone or something.....
Only thing that comes to mind is Haircut 100 - Love Plus One But I don't think that's what you're talking about. -- droxford
Here's a real obscure one that I downloaded: Y&T-Contagious. Does anyone remember this song besides me? It kicks ass.
No---not Love Plus One. I'm gonna listen to it tonight. Everyone I have been asking says "Oh yeah I know that song......but not the actual name of it or who sings it!" Now I've got everyone curious and I get...."let me know when you find out!"
The very fist CD I ever bought (well, it was actually two) was Substance from New Order. I just did and edit/find for the word "order" on every page in this thread, and I didn't get one hit (I think I do recall at least seeing Joy Division mentioned). That stinks. New Order was awesome.....I still love to hear their music
Well... for us 80's folk, New Order and Depeche Mode are a given. No need to even mention them. Also, in the 80's, their music was on the radio WAY TOO MUCH, so people are kinda sick of 'em. -- droxford
as everyone knows, the 80's had the best music by far. prince madonna (no talent dumbulb?) u2 the boss michael jackson i'd say that's a nice group. and then the 100's of songs that have been mentioned in this thread and the 1000's that haven't been.
More, from the "one hit wonders" website: Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus Living in a Box - Living in a Box Swing Out Sister - Breakout T'Pau - Heart and Soul M/A/R/R/S - Pump Up the Volume (somewhat mainstream and mostly silly, but lots of fun)
