man we post on a message board. we gave up the right to cool about 8 thousand posts ago. ill bet youve never even skateboarded past a gym hanging on the back of a jeep to the power of love before.
Off the top of my head... She's A Beauty, The Tubes So Caught Up in You, .38 Special Bad Reputation, Joan Jett Jukebox Hero, Foreigner Take the L out of Lover (and it's over), The Motels You Better, You Bet, The Who Let My Love Open the Door, Pete Townshend Destroyer, The Kinks Come Dancing, The Kinks Dream Police, Cheap Trick I Melt With You, Modern English Let's Dance, David Bowie Back on the Chain Gang, The Pretenders Black Coffee in Bed, Squeeze Owner of a Lonely Heart, Yes Don't Cry, Asia Heat of the Moment, Asia
Dire Straits - Money for nothing Joy Division - Love will tear us apart Heart - These Dreams It is not obscure, but don't forget the best love song ever - Peter Gabriel - In your eyes @ Briantoday - If you pick Screeching Weasel, have to go with the song "Guest List." Even though "Hey Suburbia" is their most famous song, "Guest list" shows how bad all pop punk rips them off (especially Blink 182)
Ho, man.. You guys are WAY OFF! I'm very surprised. You should all be ashamed. If you'll remember, back in the 80's, almost all of the songs that have been listed here were radio-played til they were trash. I bet every single one of you said "God, if I hear that Anything Box song again (maybe, for some, it was Information Society) I'm gonna puke." That ain't obscure. What you really want are the excellent 80's club songs that were popular. You probably won't recognize many of these songs by their names, but when you hear 'em, the memories will flow: The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? Bolshoi - Away Microchip League - New York New York Section 25 - Looking from a hilltop George Kranz - Din Da Da Eon - Spice St. Che - (Be My) Power Station Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love Vicious Pink - Take Me Now Lil Louis - French Kiss Split Second - Rigormortis CCCP - American Soviets Front 242 - Headhunter ... just to name a few. -- droxford
Not sure you can have an "obscure hit." The more songs I see in this thread, the more I wonder how I survived the 80's while still managing to cultivate good taste in music.
consider you were probably listening to much harder stuff than anything listed in this thread in the 80s...true? I seem to recall you admitted once to being quite the metalhead back in the day. Im not gonna bother listing obscure 80s songs...cause 90% of mine wouldnt be waht FFB is looking for anyway... and btw...I think at least 20% of the songs listed are actually late 70s..
From 80-83 or so, I listened to everything that was on the radio and a lot of older stuff - Motown, Atlantic R&B, Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, etc. From 83-87 or so, I was basically a metalhead. After 1987, though I still listened to metal at times, my interests started to broaden widely from pop and roots rock to blues, folk music, jazz and Latin. By 1990, I really didn't care much for metal any more. So, for a few years, you are correct. But, the majority of the 80's was not focused on metal for me.
Very good song!! Any of Alan Parsons Project is good! I like Breakfast in america too! Any of queen is good too!
Have you ever noticed that there was a fine line between a metal-head and country-music-lover? It always seemed like metal-head fans one day turned into C&W fans, and vice versa. -- droxford
Not me! But, I know what you mean. Seems like a lot of the ****-kicking rednecks who now eat up Toby Keith used to dig Motley Crue and Metallica. Not sure where that connection is. If you want proof something is wrong with this scenario, you need look no further than former metal singer Ron Keel who re-invented himself as country singer Ronnie Lee Keel. I **** you not.
is there a reason no stations play michael jackson? i know 106.9 doesn't but back in the day before the point, when 96.5 was my main source of 80's music, they never played any of his songs either. and i mean that in the sense that i never once heard a song of his in 100's of hours of listening. i wanna say BOB fm in austin has actually played a song or two of his but other than that i've never really heard his stuff on the radio. it can't be the whole child molesting thing since he still seems to get huge applause at everything he shows up at so i assume it must be some legal thing, but what that is, i have no idea.
i don't know if the song is the least heterosexual ever, but the video most definitely is. gay p*rn is straighter than that video.
ill bet youve never even skateboarded past a gym hanging on the back of a jeep to the power of love before.
so is it physically possible to hear "power of love" and not think of michael j. fox on his skateboard in "back to the future." i'm fairly sure it's not as i can't do it, but i need some more opinions. love that song. i haven't looked at the whole thread but has fry from futurama's favorite song, "walking on sunshine" by katrina and the waves been mentioned? and since Isabel mentioned missing persons already, i'll add "destination unknown" and "what are words for" by them as well. and "no more words" by berlin also.
About half of the songs in this thread are played on 106.9 The Point at least once a day. If you hear it on The Point, it's not obscure... Yo Manny, I think it's time for a "best 80's song" tournament...whaddya say?
