Anti, Well, although the old adage "white men can't jump" is obviously not true, how high you jump, how fast you run, how fat, how skinny, how tall, etc are greatly influenced by genetics. You can improve you ability to jump, but you nor anyone will ever be able to jump higher than they were genetically made to jump. My family has strong legs. To get the maximum out of your leaping DNA, I would suggest strength training for your lower body and jumping exercises. Stand under the basket and jump up and touch the bottom of the backboard about 20 times, or as many as you can. Do that about 4 or 5 times. I'd also suggest doing that after you've finished playing. You don't want to wear out your legs before you play, because that can raise your chances for an injury (sprained ankle or knee or worse). As for weight training, you have to know what you're doing. Lifting weights without using proper form is the fastest way to hurt yourself. My favorite leg lift, as I've said, is squats, but you can seriously injure yourself if this lift is not done properly. If you want to be safer, you can do Leg Press. This will strengthen your legs just as effectively as squats, but you miss out on the strengthening of your back, and other "assisting" muscles. Other great leg lifts include: lunges (man I hate these, but they are awesome), calf raises (highly underrated if you ask me), dead lift (another risky lift), hamstring curls (a very overlooked area), and leg extensions / raises (some say this is bad on the knees, but again if done properly....) I hope some of this helps. I've been fortunate enough to have weight lifting coaches that stressed form and have ingrained that concept into my brain. Happy Jumping! Rockets R' Us, Funny story. I was 17, and I had just slightly injured my leg in a football game. I went to the doctor and had an X-ray. The injury wasn't serious, just a bone bruise (or something). But, when the doctor was explaining the X-ray, he said, "And look here. See the joints at the knee?" "Well, from the lack of white in this area I can tell that the joint is no longer growing. This means you've stopped growing." Now, if that doesn't suck, I don't know what does. I didn't go into that doctor's office to be told I was finished growing at the age of 17! Anyway, most people continue growing until at least age 18 or 19, and some even continue growing into their early 20s. So, don't give up hope. AND, don't let some stupid doctor tell you more about an X-ray than you want to know. Leg Press is good, but a totally different measure of leg strength than squats. I've pressed over 700 lbs on a "hip sled". ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem. DREAMer's Rocket Page
