I just wanted to say that while I'm reading this thread, I'm eating a Triple Cheeseburger from Wendy's. 3/4lb of beefy goodness...
I couldn't tell you the last time I had one of those, but damn it was delicious (even though the ****ers forgot to put my lettuce on there )...
Is Randall's still around there? Their sister store up here in Dallas (Dallas) sells longhorn meat. Less fat, calories, and cholesterol than chicken or turkey. Bison meat is also good (I get it from Market Street up here in Dallas). The only problem is they're both pricey in comparison to their fattier versions. They both usually cost around $3.99-$4.99/lbs at those stores. *EDIT* : FYI, I like the taste of bison meat more than longhorn from what I've tried.
No, there are several vegan burgers. Garden Burger makes one, Morningstar makes one and some other companies do too. Boca's the most beef-like though. Try the Garden Burger Grilled Chicken patty. That's really great. But the best fake meat on the market is the Field Roast Apple Sage Sausage at Whole Foods (the Italian version's good too). You should be able to find it in the deli (fake) meat case. Grill it up with peppers and onions and have that plain or on a hoagie. Or BBQ it. Or slice it into discs, fry those up and have it with pasta and marinara.
Nothing beats beef but bison, ostrich, turkey, and tuna are all pretty tasty. If you're looking for a vegetarian option; Hungry's has a insane black bean burger, Houston's has a damn good veggie burger made with beets, Southwells has the best of them all.
Buffalo can be good. Turkey burgers are okay, if seasoned correctly. I bought some ground chicken a few weeks ago and made burgers with BBQ sauce. They were good, but tasted like a grilled chicken sandwich. I usually just buy the 93% or 96% lean ground beef. Its actually leaner than ground turkey and tastes better. You just have to make sure you don't overcook the meat. I usually cook burgers medium, so they don't get dry.
Ground beef that is not cooked well-done is at risk for e-coli bacteria. Note that the same is not true for a solid piece of meat like a steak. You only have to be careful with the ground stuff. This is because the bacteria resides only on the surface area of meat. Cooking the outside of a steak effectively kills all the bacteria. With ground beef, however, the meat surface gets all mixed in with the rest of the meat, so e-coli can be present throughout. Not saying that you'll get sick every time if you eat undercooked ground beef (unlike undercooked chicken for instance, which will make you sick every time due to salmonella) but the possibility is there.
veggie burgers w/ real bacon are delicious. And you'll feel better than after eating a cheeseburger. At least I do.
I've always read the 160 degress was the safe internal temperature for ground beef, which I thought was medium for beef. I know I have never cooked a burger to 190 degrees. Hope I make it to 30...
Me and my womanlovethang eatith the meatstuff but since she is Catholic she needs something nonmeatish during the Lent time. I'm surprised there hasn't been another recipe listed here. Start with a can of black beans. Mash em good. Bop it. Twist it. Add in shredded potatoes, corn, wheat flour, raefer alston, shredded spinach, chopped onion, sesame seeds, BBQ seasoning, fresh parsley, honey, whatever sounds damned good to you. its like good jazz. just keep going. Then shape them into patties and cook them in olive oil until crispy on the outside. You dont need lent. You dont even need threats from God. Just make em anytime!
Thanks! I've been looking for something new to try. Man, perusing Whole Foods was an EXPERIENCE after deciding to give up meat. That place is fantastic. I couldn't believe how many awesome fake-meat products there were. And they have tempeh too. I can't find that anywhere else. Batman, just curious, have you ever tried the meatless lunch meat? I'm curious about it but haven't tried it yet. It would be nice to have a turkey-like sandwich. That was my staple before.
Pretty sure this is what you want: http://www.tofurky.com/products/delislices.htm I have it all the time, on sandwiches with "nayo" (eggless mayo - very good). I recommend the regular over roasted and the cranberry and stuffing varieties. Available at Whole Foods.
