I know there are some video production people here on the BBS. Was hoping someone could share some insight. We've been a Final Cut 7 production house for a number of years. Since apple is stopping support for it and licenses are really hard to come by we are needing to change up. I tried Final Cut X but I feel like it reconceptualies Non Linear Editing and is geared toward a younger audience that work with fewer elements. We need a program that integrates with RED RAW files with a good workflow. We are trying premiere right now. I find it unstable to say the least. It does support RED Files at a really low resolution. It's fine though for standard editing. Our RED ROCKET doesn't work well with it at all which is a huge waste of an expensive resource. The color workflow though is really good. It adjusts the RAW files and does not require you to go into RED CINE to make the adjustments. I have not tried using After Effects out of premiere yet but I imagine it works well. Has anyone tried Avid? The biggest thing for us is to be able to edit with RAW RED files. Exporting .movs or .avis is just not practical. Our last two live action shorts had about 1 TB of raw footage and those are just a few minutes long. Any help would be appreciated.
Haven't used RED files but below is workflow for it using Avid. I've used Avid and FCP extensively and while the Mac platform is much more stable overall, Avid is very powerful if you invest in your hardware and have great specs to support it. http://red.cachefly.net/newrdc/website/Workflow/Avid_RED_StepByStep.pdf For more help I would probably take your question over to the forums at www.creativecow.com
I use Vegas. In regards to RED, here is a statement from SONY on Vegas 11: https://www.custcenter.com/app/answ...sion/L3RpbWUvMTM2MTM5MjkwNi9zaWQvNEFEM1Nsamw= Features of VEGAS 12: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegasprosuite/techspec (search for EPIC). Are you part of the Brigade (FaceBook)?
Red files with the Quantel are a PAIN in the but - long transcoding process Similar, but no so bad with FCP as I'm sure you already know. Smac (Smoke on a Mac) has an import process that takes some time, but not as bad as the other two. AVID is the quickest with Raw Red files - flips the files quickly and brings them right in. Good luck.
