Just bought a Gamecube. It that a good idea or will Nintendo be coming out with something new in a year or two?
I say that you shouldn't worry about the latest technology and just play what you like. I haven't bought a video game system in over five years. I'm having way too much fun with my NES, Super NES, and Genesis emulators, plus the great MAME games at my friend's house (it's amazing how easy Double Dragon is when you have unlimited quarters)... Don't worry, 15 years from now when kids are playing Madden 2019 on their new Playstation 7 with the hologram technology, you'll be having a blast on your Gamecube, looking at them the same way I look at a 10 year old kid when he says, "What the hell is Street Fighter II?" Does anybody know where I put my prune juice?
There are some real fun games for the Gamecube. Specifically, I'd suggest many of the exclusive titles: Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime (awesome game), Rogue Squadron, Super Monkey Ball, Pikmin, Mario Golf, etc. I put a wide variety up there, depending on your style. Nintendo truly doesn't have the greatest sports games, but when one comes out on all fo the systems, they are jsut as good on Nintendo as any other - Madden, SSX, etc. - EXCEPT that you can't play online. I held off on getting an XBOX this round, but think I will jump on board when the new verison comes out, whenever that is.
The Cube has some terrific games. Here are some titles I would recommend: Metroid Prime -- Great atmosphere and gameplay even if you aren't a fan of first person shooters (I'm not). Skies of Arcadia Legends -- If you enjoy RPGs at all, then you must get this one. It is simply one of the best RPGs I have ever played. Just an extremely fun game with one of the most wonderful settings ever conceived. Soul Calibur 2 -- A really great weapons based fighter. The weapons master mode, which is like a quest where you travel around fighting different battles and collecting weapons gives this game tons of depth. F-Zero GX -- This is the best racer on the Cube. Many people seem to like the new Mario Kart game, but for me, that franchise has gone downhill since the SNES days. This is the one to get. Plus, it's tough! Viewtiful Joe -- An old-school side-scrolling platform beat'em-up game with some of the best, most unique graphics anywhere. It's sort of like River City Ransom on crack. It's not easy, either. Prince of Persia -- Only buy this one if you can get the free copy of Splinter Cell with it. It's too short to justify spending full price, but it's a good deal if you can get the other game included with it. What little there is, though, is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it. Zelda: Wind Waker -- Overrated for the most part, but still a decent game. Travelling over the ocean for hours on end got annoying for me after a while, but the dungeon gameplay is solid, and most people seem to adore it. Animal Crossing -- I have logged more hours playing this game than any of the others, by far. It's like crack. Collecting the various items and attending the season-based events is extremely addictive. If you've ever played a Harvest Moon game, it's sort of like that, but with more depth and variety. Super Mario Sunshine -- Some of the levels are so frustratingly hard that they are near impossible, and the camera can be insanely annoying a lot of the time, but this is still a decent game. The graphics are pretty nice, if you're into that sort of thing. Others that look promising but I haven't played yet: Beyond Good and Evil Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Baldur's Gate Simpson's Hit and Run (Grand Theft Auto with the Simpsons!)
Some good two-player games are: Super Smash Brothers Melee- hours of head smashing fun Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Mario Kart Double Dash True Crime:Streets of LA is a good game too.
i have a playstation but i plan to get a gamecube when the price goes down. im a huge fan of smashbrothers, i still play the N64 version all the time with my roomates
Also Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is coming out February 9th if your an RPG fan. RPGs and big name sports titles are pretty much what lacks in the GC, but Skies of Arcadia, and FF:CC should keep ya occupied. Another game I highly recommend if your into arcade flight sidescrolling shooters is Ikaruga. It may just be worth a rental to see whether you like it or not, but it's got to be the single most difficult game on the Gamecube. Dunno if your a fan of Maddox, but he gave it a review giving it a ton of credit for how difficult and fun it is.
I stick to alot of multiplayers like Madden, Smash, Soul Calibur 2, and theres even Goldeneye style Bond shooters like Nightfire. Also Resident Evil is exclusive for GC. Not nearly enough RPGs like Final Fantasy and their GBA connectivity agenda is dumber than all hell. They need to get into online or their next system is going to be their last. Just started playing Final Fantasy XI online but I can't get into it... AND ITS COSTING ME 12 A MONTH!
I like the Gamecube. I hope you got the gamecube bundle with the free Zelda Collection's disk. That game is sweet containing the 2 original Zelda NES classics, 2 N64 Zelda games, a playable Wind Waker demo, and a Zelda retrospective. I have a PS2 myself as it has more games to my liking. I got a Cube for my girlfriend for her birthday. I looked at it as an investment. The more we could stay home and play video games together the less I would have to pay on taking her out to restaurants, movies, etc. The cube also has more cutsey games that she likes for example Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball, Harry Potter, Pac Man vs, etc. Don't get me wrong I enjoy some of these games also. Furthermore I think the Cube has better multi-player games that we can both enjoy. I'm waitng for Mario Kart to go to Greatest Hits before I get that for her. I can't stand playing $50 for a game and then months later it go down in price to $20.
Crystal Chronicles got a bad review by the IGN crowd and, by the looks of things, seems to be too multi-play dependant for my liking. I've decided to pass on that one. I owned Ikaruga for a while and I agree that it is brutally hard. It's also too short and the screen area was too small for my liking. Kam -- No, Viewtiful Joe is single-player only.
I have to say... this was the best game I've ever played. I think it's worth the price by itself. It's really really good and worth the hype. The sense of space in that game is just awesome, and ever detail was worked out, even the controls are real easy to use (at least on the xbox) this is just a good game for any system. Here's a question though. PS2 and Xbox use full sized DVDs, gamecube uses a smaller one. Some games come out for all three. How do you fit the same amount of stuff on a smaller disc? Different compression? Gamecube is using a different type of disc? Just always wondered.
