So I was watching some highlights tonight. Most of it was NBA highlights and all that good stuff. Then they showed some NHL highlights and specifically this fight.

I started thinking.. how come they let the guys on the NHL to square off and beat the poop out of each other? Is it because of the extra pads they wear as to soften the blows? If so, why not the NFL?

Ok obviously I don't know squat about hockey, so maybe someone can enlighten me?

you guys are talking about the Belak(Toronto) vs. Janssen(NJ player)

    that was an amazing fight...

    1) you are on ice, you don't really get great balance,
    2) you have to hold on to the other guys shirt, or else you have to stop, which further gives you less balance plus allows you to avoid punches with the arm length trick.
    3) the helmet causes more damage to your hand than the other guy's face, so you have to be careful punching
    4) you have refs who stop the fight if anyone lands a good one, which rarely happens due to the 3 reasons above...or if you fall onto the ice.

... you rarely ever see any major injuries from a fight, actually I don;t even think there has been one...you can break a bone or two, but that's about it.... most of the big injuries in hockey actually occur from the body checks(hits during the game).

That's a good explanation, ChrisBosh, but... I thought they stopped the fight whenever they landed on the ice...? Not on this one, though.

    I love the jersey-over-the-head move... :)

Belak had this one going... apparently Belak is dirty... you can look him up and he comes up more times in fights on youtubes...

If you just listen, it sounds like a commentator for a BOXING match... I never heard the expression "some kind of 'goings' on" before! :D

EDIT: never mind... Janssen is the one with that late hit on Kaberle... :(
