Arenas is just a poor man's francis (shoot first, ask questions later), that's a terrible trade...

The Barry brothers are crafty players, smart players with 3 point- range are always needed on this team.

I am sure that Mobley, Cato, (possibly Griffin) and Rice will be shopped in the off season. Francis and Yao are off limits but the players listed above seem like the most valuable talent that we can offer.

    THE PLAYERS

Griffin will only get traded if we get a stud player in return, i.e. Mobley/Griffin for Elton Brand. Griffin still has upside and I don't see this team trading him unless they get a stud player. It is rumored that we already turned down Shareef Abur Rahim and Rashard Lewis in seperate Griffin trades this year. That should tell you what the Rockets think of Griffin.

Mobley has decent trade value as his contract is cheap and he produces. I doubt we move him "straight up" for someone else but only see him moved unless he is packaged with someone else such as Cato or Griffin.

Cato has lots of trade value as he is a solid center/rebounder/post defender and there are a number of teams that could use his services, especially in the East.

Rice's value is that his contract comes off the books after next year and is worth 9 Million. The Rockets can get a more talented player at the 9 Million range in exchange for Rice's expiring contract. This could be a huge bonus for the Rockets!

    WHAT TO DO?

Ideally I would love for the Rockets to try to acquire a third "star" player such as an Elton Brand or a Ray Allen to add to the mix of Francis and Yao.
    Mavs have Finley, Nash, Nowitzki
    Sac has Webber, Peja, Bibby
It would be nice if the Rockets could add a third player to their mix. That would give them more "consistency" something that they need. There are nights when either Francis or Yao are off. And that hurts us. But with a third star player the chances of all 3 or 2 of the 3 being off on nights is slim. That's what is so great about the Mavs and the Kings. They always have two of their 3 star players playing well each night. Consistency!

Aside from a blockbuster trade for a third star player, I would like the Rockets to find a "combo guard" that can play either the 1 or 2 but be able to handle the ball and play some back up PG duties to allow Francis time to roam at the 2. The Rockets really need a "spark plug" player off the bench such as Bobby Jackson or Nick Van Excell. If we can't find a "combo guard" then a "pure shooter/gunner" such as the Clippers Piatkowski might be a nice option as a back up SG. Bottom line, we need a THIRD guard to compliment Mobley and Francis. Moochie is not it!

If the Rockets end up trading Cato then I would not mind seeing the Rockets use their MCE on a player such as PJ Brown to take Cato's place as the rugged rebounder. PJ can play the 4 or the 5 off the bench.

I also feel that whatever moves we make it needs to result in us getting some Veteran players (they can be role players). We need some players that can speak up and tell it like it is to these young players. The Pacers are a very young team but they have the luxary of having a Reggie Miller on their team. You can't discount the presence of veteran players. Just look at how the Rockets talk about Rice and his veteran leadership. Rice has never been regarded as a leader but since he is the ONLY veteran he is annointed this role.

I have mentioned above a few things that I would like to see done. I am not suggesting that the Rockets do ALL of these things, but some of them. I am not suggesting an overhaul of the team but I do think it needs to be tweaked a bit.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Rockets can't sign any free agent for the max. The only way is to trade and sign.

I really hope that we make a run at Lamar Odom. He is coming of injuries and hasn't had the best run in LA but he has unbelievable talent and he fits in with our backcourt. Since he can handle the ball and has a pg-like mentality he would make up for Steve's pg ills. Lamar is the man!

    Steve/Mooch
    Cat/Hawkins
    Odom/Nachbar/Rice
    Griffin/MoT/TMo
    Ming/Cato

I would love to have Arenas on the team. Although I really like Cat, I'd rather have him than Cuttino. Don't want Snow, but Barry would be pretty nice. Much better than Rice...
