Time Inc. Launching Officepirates.com on Feb. 22

    Stephanie D. Smith

    FEBRUARY 10, 2006 -

Time Inc. on Feb. 22 will finally launch its much-hyped men's online magazine Office Pirates after several years in development. A Time Inc. spokesperson declined to comment.

The site will embody the spirit of lad mag humor found in magazines such as Dennis Publishing's Maxim and Stuff, packed with funny videos and off-color jokes. Its home page, officepirates.com, gives a preview of the irreverence to come--a sign of a skull and crossbones wearing a tie warns visitors, "Prepare to be boarded."

Office Pirates has been the pet project of Mark Golin, former editor of Maxim and Condé Nast's Details. Time Inc.'s Sports Illustrated.com ad sales team, which has targeted male-friendly automotive, food and alcohol advertisers, is handling the site's ad sales.

Office Pirates marks a departure for Time Inc. The world's largest publishing company has been built on the journalistic integrity of franchise titles such as Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. And while the publisher has branched out to lighter fare for women, including In Style and All You, the men's titles have yet to veer off in that direction. Office Pirates, however, will most likely mirror the slapstick, candid camera humor of e-mail forwards and snarky blogs.

The site is also an example of Time Inc.'s energized commitment to forging deeper into the Internet. In recent months, CEO Ann Moore has engineered two major management shuffles and has laid off a over 100 staffers in an effort to cut $100 million in costs. In December, Moore said that some of that savings would help Time Inc. invest further into its online properties.
