Haven't listened to much hip-hop lately, but thanks to some of the hype here I've gotten back into it. While Kanye certainly tries to make radio hits, I think he does sincerely try to make art other times. I love the CRS (Kanye, Pharrell, Lupe) track where they rap over Thom Yorke's Eraser. Dare I say, between those 3 guys and numerous others, we may slowly move away from mainstream gangster rap again. It's all in cycles.

Love em or hate em, my opinion is it's a refreshing break from the "from the window, to tha wall" and bay bay wha? and such. Kanye's rapping/lyrics are not bad. I mean white folks, gangstas, and the thugs bay bay bay? I mean really? Till the sweat drop/drip down my balls? REALLY?!

I'm not super old school with rap, I only enjoyed it when I started to listen in my HS days. I won't ever claim I am a hiphop head, but I know what I like and what I don't. Kanye's music, along with Timbaland (minus the Timberlake stuff, haha sorry JT lovers), Outkast, UGK, Pharrell, among a select few others give me a reason to check what's on the radio now and again (mainly XM, FM is just...yeah). They may not be reviving rap music, but they are keeping it afloat.

Again my opinions...but I enjoy this new CD.

Hey now, lend the man a little credibility on this one: Kanye works with Pharrell on a regular basis, and The Neptunes were some of the producers for that Daft Punk song.

I don't recall the Neptunes ever producing stuff for Daft Punk. I don't follow them much, but I doubt Daft Punk ever bring in other producers except for maybe the occasional collaboration. If they did, they wouldn't have anything else to do in the studio (except maybe sing occasionally w/ a vocoder). And in the Wiki entry the Neptunes only did a remix of said song.

I find Kanye West's work to be overblown and pompous ("Jesus Walks?" Can this be taken seriously?), but I'll listen to him 30 times before I switch to Hurricane Chris. This "Walk it Out" **** has got to go!

I won't be checking out Kanye or Fitty's new "joints" but I have copies of both UGK's double CD and Chamillionaire's Ultimate Victory. Hey, I'm a Houston homer. Both have some really great stuff on there with some throw-aways, too. Lil Wayne has just... got... to stop rapping on everyone's album! I think he's good, but there's too much of him! I thought Bun B was ubiquitous...!

Anyhoo, best rap cd of the year?

    That's why I said a little credibility ;)

I probably should have went the offensive rout with my defense of Kanye, saying that Daft Punk sampled Edwin Birdsong anyway.

Yea, damn kanye for bringing a little bit of music that no one listens anymore back to relevance and into the mainstream. Him using that sample, means that he got permission and paying royalties for work that was done years ago. oh the horror.

I've always loved the old school feel of this video and like the samples too.

It looks like 50 Cent is headed for retirement, if store reports continue to trend the way they were by mid-afternoon today (Sept. 11). 50 Cent had told SOHH.com that he would quit the rap game if his new G-Unit/Interscope album, "Curtis," was outsold by Kanye West's Def Jam set "Graduation," both of which were released today.

Sales data is finalized Sunday at midnight when the Nielsen SoundScan week officially ends, but early indications are that West will be the victor, at least in the first week.

According to executives with three of the major labels, whose job duties include projecting first week scans based on early store sales reports, "Graduation" could come in at the 575,000-700,000 range, while "Curtis" is being projected in the 500,000-600,000 range.

Meanwhile, Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates," also released today, is projected to arrive the 400,000-550,000 range, with one sales projecting guru putting the country star neck and neck with 50 Cent.

A check with one Northeast urban-oriented store selling both the 50 Cent and West albums found the former outselling the latter seven copies to three copies today.

But when asked why there was such a light turnout for the two biggest urban music stars, the store owner admitted selling 144 copies of "Curtis" and 91 copies of "Graduation" over the weekend, "Of course, you realize Sept. 11 wasn't the release date in my store," he said.

Greatest rapper alive! Houston comes alive in Devin's raps like no other rapper's. I really don't even listen to much hip-hop; I listen to extreme rock. But Devin the Dude is just... THE ****! One of my favorite musicians of all time.

first time I've heard something clarifying his actions. That MTV Europe deal where they told him he would win is messed up, and they didn't let him play on the main stage last night. I mean there's no excuse for PMS'ing but its starting to somewhat make sense.

    Great CD...
I sampled it 2 weeks ago when it was bootlegged and I bought a copy today. Although 13 tracks is short for a album these days, there are barely any skip-overs. I'd say 9 out of the 13 are great, quality songs you can jam for a while.

Good CD to bump in the car during rush hours and even before you go out to party. It's also got some mellow sh*t upi can smoke a blunt and chill to. Only con for me? A WHOLE song dedicated to Jay-Z, whom I'm not really too fond of.

    The CD is..... fresh.

I say fresh because I haven't heard anything like it since Lupe's Food and Liquor. Albums like this come around once every two year's or so in hiphop for me. I said "for me" for people out there that like nitpicking at what people say. I'm just talking from my personal experience.

You just don't hear albums with this type of quality often and that's all that really needs to be said.
