I need to set up a network on my Windows Xp based home PC. Its running on a p4 with 256 sdram. (if that info helps) I just got a wireless router so that my ibook could also get the internet, and it picked it up perfectly. Now the only thing I need to do is be able to print off of my printer which is connected to the PC. I set up a network and tried looking for it on my ibook, but I couldnt find it. So if any of you can help me figure this out pls pls post. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

Go to your printer folder on your PC machine, right click on the printer you want to share, and click properties. Click the sharing tab and select "share this printer".

On your laptop, go to the printer folders and click "add printer". When it asks you what type, select network printer, click next and then browse for the printer. Hopefully, the printer that you set to share on the PC will show up.

Oh I get the same thing; XP freezes when I even try to go into the properties of either computer.

I never actually got the network to work.

Im not familiar with Apple's implementation of networking..so this is a ingeneral way for using a shared printer.
It may not apply to how the iBook works.

You need to browse the network..on a PC you would open Network Places and browse to your other machine...then double sclick on it..and the printer would show. You would then double click the printer and your computer would set it up.

You need someone with Apple experience to say how to translate this to your iBook.

I would say that I fit the description above. What version of Mac OS are you using? I have this very setup at home, so I can walk you through this no problems. The other thing to bear in mind is that you'll need an appropriate driver for the printer on the Mac too. Is it a new printer? If so you should have no problems, otherwise there may be an alternative route to use, depending on what OS you're using.

I hate to be pedantic, but what version of OS X? The printer set-up has changed from 10.2 to 10.3

OK, I'll try to give a generic description of how to do this.

You need 4 pieces of information from your PC:
    1. The printer's share name
    2. The PC's network name
    3. The workgroup name of the network you set up on the PC
    4. The PC's IP address
      [/list=1]
If you don't know how to obtain any of these pieces of information, then there are plenty of people on here who should be able to help you out.

Firstly, we should check that the iBook and PC are on the same network. To do this, open the Terminal application on the Mac, and type:

      ping [IP address you obtained]

You should get a response saying 64 bytes from XXX. If not, there is a basic problem with your network, and we'll need more information to help. Hit Ctrl-C to stop the ping process, and quit Terminal.

If all is well, you should be able to go to the Print Center application, and hit 'New Printer'. When the window pops up, select 'Windows Printing'. You should now see your workgroup name in the window on this screen. Double click that, and the name of your PC should appear. Double click that, and the printer name should appear (it may prompt you for a username and password. If this happens, use the details you log onto the PC with). Click on the printer name once, and then select the printer model and make from the drop down box. Hit OK, and voila, there's your printer.

The previous paragraph assumes that you're using OS X 10.3 If you're using 10.2, I don't think you can browse to the printer. In this case, you'll need to hold down the option key when you click on 'Add Printer' initially. This should give you some extra options. You should pick 'Windows Printer via SAMBA'. Now, there is a text field labelled URI, or something similar. In this box, type:
      smb://[Computer Name]/[Printer Name]
and choose the appropriate printer type from the drop-down. I have to admit, I don't have a 10.2 installation any more, so I'm going from memory.

      Hope that helps!

    It is Mac OS 10.2.6
I know all the names and Ip addresses. I went through the hold option and add printer. But it doesn't give me the "'Windows Printer via SAMBA' option.

The Terminal application lives in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

If there's no Windows Printer via SAMBA, is there an 'Advanced' option? I'm doing this from memory.

OK, it's a little more complicated than I remembered, I had forgotten the tinkering around I needed to do.

Here's a reasonable explanation of how to enable printing to Windows in Jaguar (yet another reason to upgrade to 10.3!)

    Hope this helps.

I'm going to bed now. I'll look back in the morning.

hate to derail this thread but....
I am interested in getting a wireless router so that I can access the internet with my laptop...no wires no nothing.
I have broadband internet connection...2wire is the service i think
but there are two comps...one downstairs that is the base and then upstairs is a comp which is connected to the net through the base comp.
if you can tell i have hardly no idea about what I am talking about
but how could I make this setup work with a wireless router?
    windows xp p4

basically all you need is a wireless router. Connect the ethernet port that goes from your modem to your computer into the router, and then run another wire from the router to your computer. And then basically get a wireless card for your downstairs computer(usuallly about 30-80 bux) and woila, it picks it up and you are wireless. You could add a wireless card on the first computer too, but its really a waste especially if it is right beside the modem, and the router.

ok i misread your post. You said downstairs is the main base, so put the wireless card on the upstairs and the laptop. and put the router downstairs by the base computer
