My internet won't come up, and iut must be particular to my computer, because we're on a hub, and none of the girls are having internet problems. ( I am on one of their computers right now.)

I am on Windows 98. I signed off two nights ago, no problem, and since it had refused to sign on, though it's working fine in all other respects. I tried defragmenting, disk cleanup, running MSCONFIG and altering the strting settings, etc. ( I am sure none of this was related, or could have possibly helped, and those who know computers are laughing at my ignorant, futile attempts to do something...it's just all I know how to do.)

Is something in my computer fried? Is there a virus? Is there some test I can run to find out? ( I checked all the hysical links...fine,and the light is on at the bacl where the intenet hook is.

Please help, if you can. Remember, though that you are dealing with a complete computer moron, and also I will have to read your help and run upstairs to implement it. I suppose, if it's very involved, I could print it out.

    Thanks in advance.

    basic troubleshooting....

check your network cable, swap it with a known good one(from one of the other computers that are working)

check in device manager to see if there is a problem with your network card.

thats what I would start with.

Send an email to andyjmoon@hotmail.com and I will send you my phone number if this doesn't work.

Open a command prompt (Start-Programs-MS-DOS Prompt) and type "ping www.clutchfans.net" (without quotes) and see what it returns. If it shows an IP address (something like 207.80.150.1) for clutchfans.net, then you are on the internet.

If you are not on the internet, then I can help you troubleshoot it over the phone more than likely. Send an email.

Are you on cable or DSL?

If so, are you using a firewall (most commonly a Linksys router)?

that wouldnt be it since he says that the others connected to their common network are able to connect.

good idea about the ping....if his DNS settings are messed up.

    1) Tried...didn't work.

    2) What is my device manager? Where do I find it?

Hook up your internet connection directly to one of your PC's. Most DSL connections will automagically bring up a web page diagnostic.

No. I resent it and if it still doesn't come through, I am in the book in Houston.

Just want to thank everyone who tried to help out, and andy in pareticular for talking me through stuff for a while, but after a few attepmts, and conversations with the tech detps at my cable company and for my router service, they are telling me that the problem is in my computer. Oh, andy, they wouldn't give me the IP addresses, as they don't officially 'support' using routers.

    I'm stumped.

    MacB,
I also know a trick that will allow your computer to get to the board if you want to call.
