I am leaving for Australia in a couple of days (will be there all semester) and I am conflicted. I have a few thousand dollars in cash that I dont want to put in my banking account (theres a reason, just trust me). Should I go to the bank here and get travelers checks or should I bring the cash with me on the plane and get the currency converted when I get to Australia? Will I run into trouble carrying that much cash on the plane with me (Its less than 5 thousand)? Whats the best plan? Also, I want to set up a couple of separate areas to post pictures from my trip. One for friends and one for family. Whats the best site to use? Flikr? What are the advantages to using a pay site? Thanks for help in advance.
When I was living abroad, I had a friend that worked for HSBC. He said to me that it usually better to bring cash, because you get better rates when converting it to another currency. However, the downside to it is the security issue. You would need to keep the cash safe. With 5k though, you would not have a problem with carrying the cash on the plane. I think you only would need to declare if your carrying more than 10k.
I thought the title was " Need advice for a broad" we are about due for a girl thread this week (we just got our weekly "was this racist? thread". C'mon, quotas people, QUOTAS!!!!
5 thousand isnt a huge amount. carry the cash. dont leave it in one spot ( your wallet) spread it out. A thousand in your wallet, A thousand in your laptop bag, etc etc... Use gmail's photo site, its very nice and has a nice interface with picasa...
Where in Australia are you staying? Which parts are you going to visit/travel to? Good idea to carry the cash with you, but as adeel said, keep it in different places. We're not all descendants from convicts As always, probablya good idea to keep some on a card for emergencies etc...
I am going to be studying at Curtin, which is practically in Perth. Honestly, over the next six months I plan on going to every single part of australia. Where are you from? Do you know who the other Aussies on the message board are? Also thanks for the advice to the people who said bring the cash.
While you get better rates I would still be careful carrying that much cash while travelling. As for other Aussie Clutchfans I'm guessing "Aussie Rocket" and "aussierocket" are. I here Perth is a really nice city and there is some interesting scenery on the West Coast of Australia so have a nice trip.
I'm from Perth and love the place, While the nightlife may not be the same as Sydney or Melbourne, Perth is a beautiful place and the people are much more laid back that Sydney or Melbourne. Also have some of the best beaches in Australia both in the metropolitan area and a few hours drive from the city. If you ever need any help in or around Perth feel free to contact me, I'm always up to help any fellow clutchfans.
I'm in Melbourne, complete other side of the country from Perth. As far as the other Aussies, there's dockerland (above), Smeg of course (from Adelaide, IIRC), and a few others from various places (hooroo, etc...) If you come down to Melbourne, you should check out an AFL (Aussie rules football) game. Sure, you probably won't know what's going on, but the atmosphere is fantastic. Everyone I know who's travelled to Perth has loved it. Apparently it's the most isolated capital city in the world...? dockerland, can you confirm or deny this fact?
If your up for an AFL game you can always check out Fremantle or West Coast here in WA. Personally I would stay away from West Coast but I'm biased. As for being the most isolated place, I do believe that is correct but that is how we like it
