i don't know. it seems like you see about 50 things a game from the players and coaches in a typical football game that would get you a technical in a basketball game. coaches can scream until they cough up a lung with no flags thrown. i think they already did a good job of that last year when they made the new rule that 16 technical fouls in a season would get you a suspension. i believe only one guy, rasheed of course, reached the 16 level and even he did it at the very end of the season. that was a big decrease from rasheed's heyday of 40+ and even other guys crossing into the 20's. why do we really need to crack down on it any more than that. one every 5 games or less or you get suspended was a pretty good deterrent. now they're handing them out like candy, which will really be crazy with the suspension rule still in place (at least i think it is), for almost nothing. there should be like a one second grace period after calls. just simply throwing up your hands and saying "what!" shouldn't get you a tech. if you do that for one second and then catch yourself and realize there's no more whining and go about the rest of the play, then that should be allowed. you can't expect someone to show absolutely zero emotion after a tough call. it's not like this is a new thing. guys have been showing emotion forever. and it's not like it's just primadonnas complaining today. mj used to tear refs a new one when he didn't get his way and he wouldn't even get T'd up. and he wasn't the only one. like i said, if you wanna crackdown, then just eliminated incessant whining. it should be about showing up the ref, not having an ounce of emotion. if a guy starts whining and goes over to the ref and is gesturing all over, okay crackdown on that if you want, even if it wouldn't have been a tech in the past. but if a guy just gets frustrated by a call and throws his hands up real quick and yells but then catches himself before he's done anything to show up the ref, then let it go, stop stopping the game unneccessarily, stop inserting yourself into the action, and lets pretend these are adults with a tiny bit of free will. and that's more to stern than the refs b/c they're probably doing what he wants. and i really like stern (and his godfather like persona and power are big reasons why) but he's starting to go a little off the deep end with some things and his stubbornness about them.
You're just a high school ref, you have no business talking about NBA refs. So please zip it. I do hope some high school players spike the ball and hit you in the mouth. I can gaurantee you the whole crowd will be cheering when that happens. Mark my word on that. Wanna make a bet? Let's all clap whenever a ref get smacked in the head with a ball!!!
Watch the replay again son. Look at Mark Cuban, he got up and clapped as soon as the ball smacked that stupid ref in the mouth. And if you would listen to the crowd, there was laughs and jeers too. If you watched TNT Halftime Report, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, and Kenny Smith was joking about the crowd loved it! That ref needs to retire! SMACK THEM REFS!!!!!!!!!! Cheer when they fall!
I don't think there's fundamentally a huge problem with refs calling more. It just means that the players have to adapt their game to it and not allow the refs to call them so much on their play. It's a good thing the refs can use technicals, too. Cause many players abuse their privilege and pretend a foul wasn't one even if it was, especially if it counts and then the crowd ofcourse will follow the players lead and it makes their work harder. And also that some might be intimidated and not call accuratelly. And this has nothing to do with manhood. We're not talking about children who need to affirm their manhood playing silly power games. The players try to intimidate other players and that's acceptable, but the ref's role is different. So I'll agree with Stern to that. There is a catch though, when the refs are favouring a team with their calls, then you really have trouble. You have 3 refs for that also, cause a single one might have been too far away from the foul or favoring a team but 3 theoritically cannot. But you do have fans complaining they were pro-Utah, in the first game. If that's true it's a problem. Ref's shouldn't give more of a 5% advantage to the home team ideally(since they know their court better and other details they get benefits the visiting team doesn't get) and in all games. Add 5% more to the champs if you want(though you shouldn't, it's a new season) and maybe the best players(though if you're the best player, you should be able to prove it regardless). But favoritism, no, you can't have that. And btw, if you're good in passing(like the ball not touching the ground) and placement in the court, refs shouldn't be able to call you much anyway, so maybe it'll improve the game in the end. As for the foul trouble, I guess teams with depth and accurate foul shooters will prevail. But those teams always did, as far as I can remember(if you're good you'll be good in those areas too). That's how I see it anyway.
i am glad someone else thought so. i looked at his other posts on this board..and i ain't even going to comment to such crap.
saturday november 4th... 9 games. At least 1 tech in every single game. So any bets on how long it'll take players to adjust?
I just bought season tickets for the first time. Had not been to a live game since before Yao due to money - but justified this on being my Xmas, birthday and fathers day presents probably for the next 2-3 years unless my biz kicks back into gear soon. But I was amazed by the touch fouls and even a few non-touch fouls on the perimeter. The other side is Yao is not very physical on defense but he is just manhandled WWF like in the post by the Dallas big men - to the point of it being an impediment to his ability to even move or receive the ball - they have him in arm locks etc. But no calls - sometimes even when he shoots they hammer him and knock him down and there is no call. I saw Mutombo get hammered on ORB's a few times trying to put it back up and - nothing. Then Tmac got called - I think it was his 4th and he and I were both incredulous as he never reached and touched his man and it happened right in front of me. Then of course there was the Dirk technical where he jawed for about 30 seconds on an out of bounds call he didn't like but the refs seemed very patient - too patient? before the hands went up on the shoulders and he was called. I can assure you no-one Yao or Tmac would be allowed that latitude on the Rockets. So I don't want to hear Cuban jawing today on unfair treatment. If anything the refs seemed to try to get the Mavs back into the game thru the 3rd qtr. But then in the 4th the Rocks stopped getting called - but they were not particularly aggresive on D as the Mavs just stunk - and the Mavs were reaching and grabbing a lot. I was particularly pleased when Rafer? blew past Dirk on the right side with the ball about midcourt and Dirk slapped his butt and got called - he was obviously frustrated - 31 pt blowout will do that to you. But my summary would be the refs seemed really unpredictable last night - they seemed to make it up as they went along. Typical rookies got called tighter than vets. Travel calls seemed correct most of the time and then - ??? not sure what the ref saw as a guy would begin dribbling and then move and immediately get whistled - ??? I thought that was how they were supposed to do it. The Utah game was frustrating as it seemed liked the refs were homers and definitely let the Jazz hammer us hard even with Harpring on the perimeter going after Tmac physically and not calling stuff that every other perimeter player in the league would get an immediate call for. The combo of the Sloan and Gundy anti effects? I really saw it as affecting our team game all around. I realize it will never be 100% clean but let's face it there has always been a Michael Jordan/Kobe effect and then the teams - like Gundy that the refs don't like. Mavs big guys should have all fouled out last night.
c'mon guys, give them a break.... ok ... /sarcasm. It's actually pretty funny. I saw the amounts of FTs given, and it coincides with the new balls, which made every FT an adventure so far. At least that's my best way of explaining it. We'll give you more FTs, but you'll miss more! The other thing is, eventually, these FTs could only help make certain teams win, at least that's how I imagined it. What better way to set a game otherwise right? But that's just my conspiracy theory talking.... I just can't wait to see the fallout when a guy lets a foul go, went back on defense and lift his arms up and got called for a T.
i am no maverick fan, but the last NBA finals was nothing short of fraud. I have little respect for NBA refs.
