OK, we thought we were getting a soft, silky Euro shooter, but from all the accounts I hear, this guy may be the next coming of Brent Barry. Good from 3pt range, one of the best white dunkers, and like Barry plays no defense. Nachbar is a bit bigger, 6-8/220 vs 6-6/195. That's not bad, and I like the way the Rockets talk him up in the media, but it looks to me that they are over-committed to him, which may not be prudent. Did they forget that Odom and Rashard are still available, and both of them are better than a bigger Brent Barry? Either we are not going after them, or CD/RT come out looking rather cold if they ship him after the love-fest of the last couple of days.
I've actually heard him compared to a young Peja. Being as good as one of the Barry boys won't be bad though.
Didn't you read what Nachbar said? He wants to be the first Nachbar, not the 2nd anybody. This thread needs to be locked before some bad mojo is conjured up.
He seems to be more of a Peja/Hedo/Schrempf type of player. I don't think he has the ball-handling skills of Barry and I don't think Barry has the shooting skills of Nachbar.
Barry racked up 5 assists per game this year. If Nachbar can do that, I'd be thrilled. Why do you think the Rockets are overcommitting? The fact is, Nachbar is a lot cheaper and frankly, I don't want him to be so good that he asks for the max or almost the max. I just want him to fit this team like butter. If he can shoot the lights out, play smart team ball and team defense, do some of the little things, and drive occasionally for the dunk or easy layup, I'll be ecstatic and wouldn't trade him for Rashard or Odom.
Remember that a lot of people thought Berry would play the 1/2 in the NBA because of ball-handling skills and passing. He never really excelled at those things so he was relegated to shooter. Also, Berry is 6'6" on a good day. Nachbar, though listed at 6'8" actually measured 6'10" in his shoes when he came in for a workout. He is much more in the mold of Stojakovic or maybe even Toni Kukoc. He is a typical European player in that he is more skilled on offense than on defense and I think he knows that. But, they didn't draft him for defense. I mean, no one complains about the fact that Nowitzki isn't really a great defender and why should they?
Kayman, bow down to your betters ie. CD & RT they know better than any fan and they have made their picks. Odom does have too many problems and Lewis seems a little soft IMHO.
if Boki is 6'10...time for some tall-ball... Ming Cato Griffin Nachbar Francis that's pretty intimidating
Actually, Jiri Welsch (picked right after Nachbar and sent to Golden State) is actually VERY much like Brent Barry. If anyone is "another Brent Barry", it's Welsch. I see Nachbar as a Peja / Hedo hybrid. But, still, like Boki, I think he'll simply be the first Nachbar.
One other coincidence: Brent Barry was drafted #15. I based my comparison mostly on what Rudy said that he'd never seen a guy from his background (read:white dude) dunk like this. Plus Barry is a career 40% 3pt shooter, and Nachbar appear to be a good one as well. We know Barry sucks at D, and Boki apparently too. However the size difference may be substantial, if what Jeff says is true. Apparently all international players are measured bare-foot, while all NBA players are measured in sneakers. That's why according to NBA standards Yao is 7-6, and not 7-5
That's a reasonable comparison, although I think he will probably turn out a little better than Brent, although Brent has become a very good player.
Who said Nachbar is 6'10. He said in the Chronicle that he is "closer to 6'10, but that was in shoes." We have no idea whether Nachbar can pass and run a system like Barry and Kucok. Barry was very much a floor general with Payton in that Seattle offense. That ran plays with precision. We all know Kucok was a playmaker. Comparing Nachbar to these guys is way too premature. I am thrilled,,,,really thrilled,,,about getting him, but until he shows he can do anything other than dunk and shoot, he is just that....a slahing dunker and shooter. Personally, I have trouble comparing him to anyone. Tom Chambers sounds good.
He sounds like a Peja...could you imagine... "Wow, Boki has hit 5 three-pointers tonight. I wonder if the Rockets will go to him. Okay...Houston's down by 1, 12 seconds left. Francis brings the ball up, he goes to Mobley. Mobleys covered...bounce pass to Griffin. Eddie's looking, looking...he finds Boki in the corner, he will launch - no! he slashes past Stojakovic for the DUNK AT THE BUZZER! ROCKETS WIN! ROCKETS WIN!"
