Did I spell candidates wrong? Anyway, I think it has to be Kobe at this point. This guy is insane...I have no idea who else could even be considered. Garnett? Dirk? Who knows. btw, sorry if this thread was already made. I checked, and didn't see anything that said MVP.
Sorry but Kobe doesn't deserve MVP. No player on a .500 team deserves MVP. If (When) they improve their record and Kobe keeps up his play, then we can talk. At this point, I would give it to Kidd or Duncan.
Bryant is the player of the moment, but the MVP is a season-long award. What was he doing in November and December? Whatever it was, it wasn't working. Other guys have been playing their games consistently and winning consistently all season long.
Kobe minus Shaq was a losing ballclub. Kobe with a getting into condition Shaq was a losing ballclub. Kobe + the (near) real Shaq = wow. KG has has no support, but a winning ballclub. TD has no support, but a winning ballclub. I'd go Ben Wallace before Kobe, to date. Better ballplayer? No. More Valuable? YES!
Its way too early to tell. Wait until the playoffs reach so you can see who stepped up big for their team. Believe it or not, I would say that Kobe would get it after his play of late. True the MVP is a season long award, but who pays attention to what you do in the beginning of the season? Its about how good you play in the time where its needed the most, in the crunch. Even though I hate him and the Lakers, I will give him his props when its due. Kobe has helped bring the Lakers back from the dead. The Lakers were in trouble and the pressure was mounting, but Kobe has stepped his game up and the Lakers are now back in the palyoff hunt. If he continues to play like this, I hate to say it but Kobe will be the MVP.
Lakers - Shaq = 35% win ball club Kobe is not even the Most Valuable Player on his own team, much less the rest of the league. As of right now, it's between KG and Timmy.
MVP doesn't really include the playoffs as most of the voters have sent in their selection before the season is even over.
I think legitimate candidates right now are: Shaq, Kobe, Webber, Garnett, Nowitzki, Duncan, McGrady, and Kidd. Pretty large field and quite wide open. It really depends on what happens in the second half of the season in terms of those players team's success and of course their individual play. Chris
kobe isnt even the most valuable player on his own team given that he will probaly win it which i will disagree with. MVP= Duncan again
As long as the Spurs and their crappy supporting cast are high in the standings, Duncan deserves this award. Others to consider are Garnett, Kidd, and McGrady. No one else really comes close to those three. Problems with other candidates: Shaq - cost his team by waiting to get his toe fixed Kobe - didn't do squat when Shaq was gone Webber - the team barely notices when he is gone Nowitzki - too much talent on that team Payton - the Sonics suck
I didnt mean jduge the players based on their preformance in the playoffs. I said " wait until the playoffs reach" as to give time to see what players do in the second half of the season. Bad wording on my part. I should have said, "wait until the season is over to judge the MVP," but I was afraid that someone would take that as me saying, " wait until the whole season is over, including playoffs and finals," to judge the MVP of the league. And what's this bout Kobe not being the MVP on his own team? So who is, cuz it aint Shaq right now. I guess you meant Rick Fox then, huh? It is true Kobe and Shaq cant live without each other. When Shaq is there, the opposing defense collapses around him, which opens lanes for the perimeter players. But, when the Lakers were missing Shaq in the beginning of the season, who was trying to still lead this team; Rick Fox, Derek Fisher, Slava Medvedinko? No, it was Kobe. And now that Shaq is back, who is doing the scoring, especially in the last seven games. Kobe with 30 or more points in the last seven games as NBA2night pointed out last night after his 51 point outburst. Now to clearify myself, I did not say he is the MVP. I said if he keeps playing like he is right now, he will be the MVP
You guys are ridiculous. You keep pointing out the fact that the Lakers suck without shaq and that Kobe couldnt carry them. Come on guys, the rest of the Lakers team could be the worst group of players in the NBA. Take out the best player on any team and look at the supporting cast. There are very few ballclubs that are worse than the lakers. Had it not been for Kobe, the Lakers would have been so far out of the playoff race that they'd be tanking right now to get LeBron. Look at it this way...Take the Lakers minus Shaq. The team looks like this: Kobe Fisher Walker Horry Fox Shaw George Rush Medvedenko Now, replace any MVP candidate with Kobe. For instance, would Kidd and the rest of the crew actually be able to do better than what Kobe did? Would a combo of Garnett and Walker make them a playoff team? The point is this: The supporting cast is horrible. The only way they can be a legitimate force is with both Shaq and Kobe. However, that doesnt mean that Kobe is not an MVP candidate.
i agree kobe is the frontrunner for mvp now since shaq is willing to play the supporting role and let kobe shooting like AI.
the kid has done it for three straight years on the biggest stage (playoffs) while other "in the running for MVP" have choked. Kobe's set the NBA record for 3pt's in a game this year. Kobe leads the league in triple doubles. Kobe has more 40 point games this year than anyone in the league. Kobe has been the catalyst to the Lakers getting back into the playoff race. Kobe is unstoppable on the offensive end and brilliant on the defensive end. All those who talk about Kobe and the Lakers slow start... don't know what the hell they are talking about. The Lakers are built around Shaq...not Kobe. This is why the Lakers have a bunch of slow stationary shooters instead of athletes with speed. Also add onto the fact that the Lakers were missing at various times Horry, Walker, George, Fox (due to suspension) during the Lakers first 16 games...and it's no wonder the Lakers got off to a slow start. Plus...for those who care...hell...even for those who don't care... the Lakers lost some pretty damn close games during that slow start...games they would easily have won if anyone OTHER than just Kobe had produced on the court. Kobe has proven he can be EVERYTHING to everyone when he's has to be. The kid has practically averaged 28 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals a game all year. Recently he decided to "turning his scoring up a notch" (by request of Phil Jackson) and the team has been devastating. In any event...if Kobe continues to play the way he's been playing...the guy will definately be the MVP...and the Lakers will undoubtedely be a major major threat come playoff time.
The reason I say it's KG is because he's done it from the beginning of the season.....not when a top five player, and the most dominate of the past several years returns from surgery. IMO, thinking Kobe is the MVP is similar to thinking Phil Jackson is the greatest coach ever.
kg is OVERRATED. he is exactly like chris webber, a "number" superstar. sure, he put up big numbers: 20-something points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists, but he's not the go-to guy. in a close game, he can't be depended to make the basket because he neither has a go-to move or a dependable jumper.
