Since you added you dislikes . .. what exactly don't you like about it?

    I'm huge on lyrics . . .
sometimes content. .sometimes turn of a phrase
sometimes the rhythm . .. so my tastes can go all over

I'm not big on JAzz because of the lack of words
But I like some . .. don't get me wrong
    but
alot of my musical tastes are lyric driven . . .
good lyrics can happen in any genre . .. . the music just makes it better

    things I don't like about...

    rap:
complete lack of melody. Over-dependence on lyrics. Very little creativity. Incessant babbling that, after a while, just makes me think, "Sheesh. Shut the hell up." With 99.9% of rap music, I just can't relate to the lyrics. And with violent or abusive lyrics, it disappoints me to think that masses of people DO relate to the lyrics.

    R&B:
commonly, popular R&B singers deviate way too far from a song's established melody. Sometimes it seems that R&B singers dot this in an effort to prove to listeners that they have singing talent, when, to me, it just sounds crappy.

    country:
Older country music is tolerable in small doses, but it (generally) is over-simplified musical structure and when I hear that over-simplified musical structure repeatedly, I start craving a genre that has more depth.

    jazz:
Frequently, jazz, to me, sounds like musicians who are trying to get too elaborate with musical structures. This is especially true with improvisational jazz. It does, however, frequently take more musical talent to play jazz, and I therefore have some respect for talented jazz musicians.

    NOTE:
These statements are certainly generalizations. They are meant to speak about a genre, not about a specific song or musician. There are songs that I like in all of the genres listed above. Also, there's really just one strong reason I don't like these genres: I just don't like 'em. They're just not in my tastes.

    Good Enough . . . no biggie. . i was curious
I have some of the same issues with some

    You are a musician correct?
I am not so . . my critique of the music portion may not be as harsh
    However . .
    I like the Lyrics. . . some turns of phrases . . . rhythm
I understand your position completely. . . Not all things are for all folx

I myself am a casual deep house fan. I really like everything from Naked Music (the record label), but besides that I don't know much about the genre. I'd also like to get into some real techno, but don't really know where to start. Specifically stuff more reminiscent of the classic Detroit days (Derrick May, Juan Atkins, etc).

My genre of choice is drum & bass (aka jungle). After that it's a random playlist of house, rock, hip-hop, pop, and jazz.

Blues mostly (On the rock side generally but I'll listen to Jump and Delta)

Rock (but good rock is hard to come by if you exclude the vein popping, screaming vocalist so it tends to be my same old dinosaurs Hiatt, Dan, Feat, CSN but also The Hives, The Recantours, Kings Of Leon, Fountains of Wayne ...there's some)

Classic Soul & Classic British Invasion (fills my head with memories of teenage girls I have known)

    Zydeco (when I'm cooking)

    What's Lyle Lovett?
    What's Dwight Yokam?
What's Los Lobos and Los Lonley Boys?
    What's Animal Liberation Orchestra?

Most liked that I listen to more or less every day:
    Metal
    Rock/Classic Rock
Classical -- opera in particular, but I like it all with rare exception.

Most liked but not listened to quite as often:
    Blues
    Jazz
Old school thugged-out gangsta sh*t (NWA, Eazy E, Street Military, Geto Boyz, etc.)
Old school outlaw country (Hank Sr and Jr, Willie, Johnny Cash, etc.)

Most HATED, i.e. crap I simply cannot tolerate:
Rap. Hell, pretty much any rap that's come out in the last 10-15 years.
New pop-country nonsense. No further explanation needed.
    Pop
Pop Rock, i.e. "**** Rock" -- Creed, Nickelback, etc.
Emo -- 'Emo'tional music? Are you serious? As though music was never so until these whiney f**ks thought up the idea? Can you get more pretentious?
    Top 40

I can pretty much sum it all up like this re: 'Most Hated': If it gets played on the radio, I'll most likely hate it. Unless its a classic rock and/or classical station, that is.

You're right. Different people have different tastes. If we all dressed exactly like me and listened to only the music I liked, the world would be a very, very boring place.

I've played piano most of my life and I play some basic guitar. In grade school, we would take field trips where we'd walk down to the symphony downtown and watch them play. Essentially, I've got a decent understanding of music and musical structure. I don't know if you'd call me a musician, though, because I've never played in a band, and never performed for anyone. I just play for fun.

It's probably hypocritical for me to list some of my dislikes, but also list blues as a favorite, considering that most blues music is very simple. I'm currently trying to figure out how I can explain that hypocrisy in myself. If I figure it out, I'll let you know. ;)

FYI - I've wanted to tell you for quite some time that I have repeatedly noticed that you have, in multiple threads, expressed your opinions, asked others for theirs and rarely (if ever) been judgmental of others' opinions. For that reason, I hold you in high regards and in great respect..... (no homo).

Me..."Eeeverything but country :) !" (...rrrrgh, dont you just hate that answer?)

I've gotten all soft and old all of a sudden and just listen to whatever's on the radio. Or maybe go too lazy to explore the finer tastes. When I do look divert away from mainstream stuff, some music types I tend to look up in no particular order:

    - Techno (eeeverything but drum N bass :) !) Deep house, "vocal" trance, remixes to popular songs, not too ravery and dancey.
    - 60's through 80's AM love songs. cheesy songs is so my thing
    - 60's & 70's R&B/Soul
    - Swing, Lounge, Vocal. crooner style like Sinatra, Rat Pack, etc...
    - Country yes I do tune into it now and then
    - 80's synth-pop Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, etc...(both the good and bad of what popular music is

Genres I generally dislike or avoid:
    - Rockabilly
    - Ska
    - Punk
    - Bluegrass
    - Gospel
    - Drum n Bass/Happy Hardcore
    - Zydeco

Could list more for both but want to see other responses

    Something Corporate
    Story of the Year

I enjoy just about every genre. I find there are good musicians and bad musicians for each genre. Top 40 has to be my least favorite. Only once in a blue moon will I find a top 40 song that I like.
