I have been getting into Lee "Scratch" Perry of late and wanted to know some other good reggae out there whether it is roots, dub, ska, or rock steady. I do plan on getting about 3 or 4 Bob Marley studio albums (especially Catch a Fire and Exodus) as well as Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" (produced by Perry) and Max Romeo's "War Ina Babylon" (also produced by Perry). After that, I'm open to suggestions - I have a couple of others in mind like stuff by Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, The Congos, and The Heptones but I am not sure if I would like those as much as the ones I have already mentioned (Perry, Marley, Murvin, and Romeo).

So, we have any reggae fans here? Any favorite albums or artists? Where would you start other than Bob Marley?

I like Steel Pulse, Luciano is a beautiful singer with some good songs-A New Day album is good, Anthony B., Sizzla, Morgan Heritage, Burning Spear is classic, Israel Vibration.

I was listening on youtube today to "If jah" by Tony Rebel, "Lift up your head" by Everton Blender, "He is Jah" by Midnite Branch.

Check out Lucky Dube...his stuff is hit or miss sometimes but his good stuff is really good. Seems like the rare African reggae artist as well.

For old skool reggae check out this album "the channel one story".

That album got me into reggae and a lot of favorite reggae songs are from that album such as "cokaine in the brain" by Dillinger (featured in grand theft auto San Andreas), "Hard to confess" by the Tamlins, and "Show me that you love me girl" by Sugar Minott.

Sugar Minott is a great reggae artist that a lot of people don't know about.

Stephen Marley's Mind Control is a good recent reggae album. It's not completely reggae, there's some hip hop influence evident, but it's a very enjoyable album. I consider Stephen to be the best of the Marley kids.

    Great thread.

Gotta add Black Uruhu, Gregory Isaacs, and Peter Broggs to ja list.

    Steel Pulse
    Burning Spear
    Toots & The Maytals
    Eek-A-Mouse
    Tosh

Can we do reggae-influenced stuff, like The Police and Sublime?

You HAVE to get the soundtrack for The Harder They Come. That's where it all starts, IMO the greatest reggae album ever. Then, you can go to Bob Marley (Exodus, Natty Dread), Jimmy Cliff, Tosh- and definitely Toots and the Maytals- Toots is like the Otis Redding of reggae- the man can sing like nobody else. Burning Spear, Steel Pulse are good, too. And I'm sure there are newer bands, too. On the rock side of reggae, The Clash' London Calling (for just a few songs like Rudie Can't Fail and Revolution Rock) and The Police Regatta de Blanc.
