I'm looking for reviews/comments/critiques on a recent recording. You don't have to be a production guru or even musician --I'm just interested in hearing how the mix sounds, which sounds/motifs are working, etc.

The name of the song is "After Midnight". Thanks for listening.

Definetly easy listening, I've listened to just over half of it so far. I like it. There was one part that wasn't too easy on the ears, and that was around the begining where the clicking noise gets really loud, louder than the guitars and everything else.

I liked the I10 song too.

Are you talking about the shakers? They are pretty loud in the mix.

    Thanks for listening! Anyone else?

It sounds like music from a love making scene in a movie.

Definitely a nice combination of TUMBAS (bongos) and MARACAS (shakers). What did you make that with, AcidPro? Nice work, man.

The recording comes out a little bit muddy. I think that part of this has to do with microphones, but part is the mix. I would cut back some of the reverb and scoop out some of the middle and perhaps try to record the guitar with two microphones to capture both the wide resonant tones but also some of the detail on the higher end.

I'm not sure if you compressed it or if it's just the microphones, but if you did cutting back on the compression would help as well. Sometimes with a mix you get too detailed in listening to it & filling up every single empty space with something, but the empty spaces are important for the contrast.

That is alot of criticisim but it is not a bad recording and mix, so please don't take it that way. I'm just trying to give you something constructive.

"This song should of been written" is grammatically incorrect. Please correct it to "This song should have been written". (I hope I am talking to the right person to do that)

Also, is "Blackie" a nickname, or was someone actually named like that?

It was a nickname from High School (long story). I thought it made for a memorable band name so I kept it.

Fruity Loops, actually. Thanks for the comments.

The mix/transition between the guitar and the bongos/maracas at the :37 mark is kinda soft/low. And it's a pretty long track...3:30-4 minutes would have bee great.

Aside from those nitpicks, very good track. Sounds very Hed Kandi/Ministry of Sound Chillout-ish which is always good in my opinion.

Actually, no microphones on this one. The percussion was programmed, everything else went through an amp directly into my laptop.

I agree that the mix sounds muddy -- I used lots of reverb to try and get the watery/ambient feel. I'll try cutting back on some the reverb and compression. Thanks for the comments!
