Wow, I can't believe there hasn't been a thread on the public beta of Microsoft Office 2007. I've been playing around with it for a few weeks now, and I LOVE the new tab form of menus. And the zoom slider thingy at the bottom is ridiculously useful as well.

    Thoughts?

BTW, you can download the beta version of Office (expires in February 2007) here. The beta will not overwrite your existing Office applications (except for OneNote), so any previous version of Office can co-exist with the beta. However, because this IS a beta, you will most likely encounter bugs and errors; therefore, I'd recommend keeping any previous versions of Office on your computer, y'know, just in case. For example, regarding OneNote 2007, I'm getting 100% CPU utilization when using the program, which is obviously a bug. I seem to be the only one having this problem, too, meaning bugs may be random. You've been warned.

I'm using it too and its pretty sweet. It has taken me a little bit to get used to where everything is but man do I like it. Its about time they overhauled the UI.

I'm downloading it right now to check it out and see what it's all about.

Yeah I heard about it a while ago, but I'm still wondering whether I should download it or not.

I don't want to ruin the sense of newness and intrigue when the complete version actually comes out.

Hell, I might download it, I'm bored of the current Office and don't have much do do this summer.

Does installing the beta require you to uninstall whatever version of Office you currently have?

It's really great, but I feel they tried too hard to "Make it Mac."

I feel like I'm using a new iMac, which isn't really a problem I guess. Very clean interface.

Although Outlook stopped working correctly for me after a day or two. My favorite part of the new Outlook is the PowerPoint preview capability.

Also the options for new documents in Word is awesome; while you could have, say, an e-mail template option before, it's A LOT cleaner and nicer to have things like that and Brochures, COver Letters, and even Blog Entry templates right there in front of you instead of being lost in a distant menu.

The biggest "problem" I encountered was a compatibility issue. If you save the file in Word 2007, it's saved as a .docx. Now, it's probably made clear, but I learned that the difficult way when I tried to print out a file at work and I couldn't open the .docx in 2003.

You do have the option of saving it as "Word Document 97-03" file (.doc).
