I recently accepted an offer and I'll be moving there in 2 months. I really don't expect much and I'll only be there for 3 years maximum (I can pay back the bonus and get out any time). I've been doing research and I'm pretty much set on either Whisper Oaks, University Hill, or Windhill Apartments. If anybody is from this area, do you guys have any recommendations or comments regarding apts, nightlife (or lack of), and food?
Went to school there, but its been a while since I've been back....its a college town, so as far as nightlife goes expect it as such. You are very limited on choices...Annex, Bullfrogs and Sportshack. Annex is a dance club/bar. Bullfrogs is a sportsbar, and Sportshack is the typical college bar. You can also hit up Nine Flags at the Fredonia Hotel and Casa Thomas as they both are decent bars. As far as food goes Butcher Boys has some of the best hamburgers and chicken fried steak I've ever had. La Caretta has some decent tex-mex. I'm sure Uprising can give you more advice than I but I will say that Nac is a nice little town that really clears out during the summer and on weekends. Most of the kids that got there are from east texas so they make the trip home on most weekends. If you're into golf the Woodlands hills golf course is decent and there are some pretty good bike trails and frisbee golf courses in town. I might also suggest Orleans Square Apts as they pretty decent if I recall.
I graduated from SFA 2 years ago. The best apartments I've been to are University Hill, Sunridge and Whisper Oaks. Cambridge Courts are pretty nice too, but it can get wild over there from time to time.
Go to the apartments with the best pool. I graduated there three years ago but was there this past summer and there's a new complex I believe at East Starr and North University. The pool was bumping. I'm not sure of the name of the complex but it looked nice. Night life is pretty repetative. Like others have said, Sports Shack and Bullfrogs/Anex are about it besides Headliners at the bowling alley. Headliners actually turned in to my favorite spot. Lumberyard used to be pretty cool but it's closed now. If you're single, that's an easy place to hook up with chicks especially in the summer. After living there for five years, the town felt like a big high school to me. Def a fun place to visit but I'd hate to live there again.
I'm probably not going to go to pools around here. I plan to actually study for MCATs and go back home on the weekends, so I'll really only have time at night during the weekdays. However, my thinking is that only nice apartments have nice pools....so I may actually have to check it out. That's good to know. I have no idea why Whisper Oaks is so cheap. It's only $500 for a one bedroom with dryer/washer, while university hills is $630+ ($680 for an outside bathroom).
One more thing....do you guys ever see any Asian people around??? I mean outside of the typical Chinese/Asian buffets and restaurants...
According to Wikipedia, it's about 1% Asian. Coincidentally, that's about the same percentage at Stephen F. Austin.
Yep, it's where I live now. Can't wait to graduate lol. The Grove is a fully furnished apartment complex, built like most college town apartments. (College Station...Austin etc.) As in it has a big pull, and is all students. Sun Ridge is okay, University Hill next door to it is really nice. ummm....as far as resturants, there are a few but when my girl and I head out for a nice meal we normally drive up to Tyler....or down to Lufkin. It's nice if you like nature, cause there is lots of it up here. For me, it's a little too...ummm.....small. I hate having to drive to Lufkin for real stores etc. I'm hoping to move out of Sun Ridge to a house in the next few months, I need a back yard for the dogs. Welcome to Nac.
Haha, maybe for others. I'll be actually working for the only Walgreens in town as a full time pharmacist starting in June.
That should have been obvious. Congrats. Have fun with the meth heads. I dated a small-town pharmacist, she struggled with it.
Its not much to do there if you're grown. Its typical college town, but I my daughter might go there. I used to go through there a lot in the big rig. There is a truck stop on the loop by the coca cola plant and their burgers are the best. Its a Morgan Oil. It is what it is.
Played a lot of Frisbee football there 40 years ago. A friend of mine went to school in Nacogdoches, found a groovy house to rent, rented out rooms to enough students to pay what the pad cost him, and had a boa for a pet. Damn snake used to escape and hide in the weirdest places. When the chick I was sleeping with turned out to be 8 feet of snake instead of a pair of East Texas peaches with stems attached, both of us jumping out of bed screaming like lunatics, I was ready to trade Nacogdoches for a plate of nachos to go. Beware of snakes.
I lived in Sunridge. I had a blast but I thought the aparments sucked. You should probably be able to find some decent houses to rent. I had a couple roomates and we rented a 3 bedroom 1500 sq foot house for $700 a month. Yeah, cost of living in Nac is awesome. There are so many people that get stuck in that 'black hole' because you can make 30k a year and live quite well.
Yep, the apartments do suck. I have a freaking family of like 8 people living down stairs, so I don't have loud music playing or my tv surround sound that loud, but they still complain about me all the time to the apartment peeps. It's me walking up and down my place, or my dog. Not my fault the floors are paper thin. Can't wait to move and get my dog a back yard. Curious, what area did you guys move out to for your 3 bedroom? I was looking at houses and duplexes on stallings / austin This town is a hard one to find a decent job. I'm working for an EMS company, but am trying to get another job. Thinking about moving to Lafayette, LA.
