Frank Black, I like Houston too, I just prefer Austin. By the way...great handle...too bad Chris Carter screwed up the show by dumbing it down in the 3rd year. It was much better as a building Heaven vs Hell showdown. DaDakota ------------------ Go Jazz * http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/Forum3/HTML/011403.html
Biomedical engineering ?? Well, Austin does have a shortage in the medical field, so I would say her chances are good. ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."
BK, that was passive-agressive of you !! ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."
yeah, Michael Dell. ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."
Funny, but just a coincedence as far as this thread goes. In fact, there is a green belt behind her house that was bought by Dell as sort of a "buffer" zone around his ranch. My sister is very happy about that, cuz it keeps the wonderful view behind her house intact. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
Yes Biomedical Engineering. She currently works for a medical devices company in Dallas. I just hope that the job market isn't beginning to dry up there in Austin. Though what you say is encouraging. ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
The best way to enjoy Austin is to avoid driving in rush hour. That means forking it over to live near your workplace. OR, live east or west of where you work, not north or south. If you live east or west then you don't have to get on the freeways which are horrendous. If you live north or south you'll be stuck on I-35, 183 or MOPAC for about 10% of the time in which you are awake. As for living in East Austin. It isn't a bad idea at all. The east side isn't the greatest neighborhood by Austin standards, but it is a fine place to live. Not to start a big conversation on gentrification, but if you bought on the east side right now you could probably sell for a big gain in the future. More and more people who work in downtown and at UT are doing just that. Prices in Austin are higher ON AVERAGE than in Houston, but you will find living in the central area to be cheaper in Austin than living inside the 610 loop and living in the suburbs to be somewhat more expensive than Houston suburbs. Roads and freeways are ugly. Austin suburbs are more beautiful than Houston's but you'll have to fight the traffic.
BrianKagy, I'm not saying Dell is a bad company to work for but I sure wish Dell would upgrade their power supplies on the diminsion and optiplex systems. 200 watts are just not enough when you have a dvd, cdrom, zipdrive, cd burner, tvtuner card, etc... I have to fix those darn things over the phone. How do you tell a person who don't know the first thing about computers that their power supply is causing their system to lock up? ------------------ I am an invisible man.
When ya'll keep talking about getting stuck on 35 or MOPAC, how long is your commute (distance and time)? I've yet to see any traffic that remotely compares to Houston of old or LA.
You have to look at it in relative terms. Could you imagine Austin if it had 4 million in the metro area? It's coming fast, and the infrastructure won't be able to handle it. I've spent the past week in Waco and Tyler. I've never been more relaxed as I drove around town. Living in Austin will probably take years off my life. ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Don't come to Austin. I'm sorry but Austin sucks. I'm 25 and lived in Houston all my life with the exception of the last two years I've been stuck in this craphole Austin. There is nothing to do here, it seems no one has jobs because there is traffic all the time. All Austin has to offer is very high rent, crappy bands that no one cares about every night which Austin boasts about because there is nothing else, and UT football games. Almost everyone is snobby and can't drive. The streets and roads are layed out moronicly and also be prepared for an hour wait at an average restaraunt like Olive Garden for example. If you ever want to see a REAL band perform, you will end up having to drive to San Antonio or Houston. Sometimes Austin gets lucky and gets a REAL band, but don't count on it. Every business is understaffed, so don't expect quality customer service. Contruction sites linger because it takes Austin 3 weeks to fix a pothole in the street. To sum up Austin, boring, worse traffic I've ever seen, takes pride in things such as live crappy no talented bands that every other major city has but does not boast about because they have more entertaining activities, everything crowded, snobby people, and to tell you the truth is not all that pretty. I'm getting the hell outa here in July and going back to the greatest, most exiting, and friendliest city in Texas, my home, the one I'll never leave again, Houston. ------------------
I don't think relative terms are always the way to look at these things. I go crazy dealing with the horrible traffic and idiot drivers in Amarillo when I am there. Give me D/FW any day of the week over Amarillo. Yet Amarillo has fewer than 200,000 people (all of whom are apparently over 90 years-old, though, or at least they drive like they are). But I've never spent muh time driving around Austin, so I don't know what it's like (come to think of it. I haven't spent that much time driving around Houston). I was taking an opportunity to bash the crappy drivers in Amarillo one more time. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
I grew up in Clear Lake...no, I'm not a fish. I got a job with First Interstate Bank branch that is located at I-10 and the Beltway. Try 1.5hrs of bumper to bumper in the morning (40mi), and 2hrs in the evening (40mi)....talking about sucking the life right out of you. I swear, I would get to work and come out of the coma I was in not to remember how I got there. That was traffic big time! It really cracks me up when someone in Austin says..."but it's all the way across town...what 20 minutes when you walk??? Now a wreck is a completely different case...that locks up the freeway here for hours! ------------------ In the end there will be no judges...only witnesses to my greatness.
Curly, I was raised in Clear Lake also....what yr did you graduate? You can probably understand my inability to empathize with complaints of Austin traffic. I used to drive from CL to Fondren Southwest every morning. After college, I moved to LA. Austin traffic is cute.
Class of '88. ------------------ In the end there will be no judges...only witnesses to my greatness.
Oooooohhh scary...I graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1988. What a strange, small world. ------------------

Now I'm really worried...how many more of us mullets are out there on this BBS? ------------------ In the end there will be no judges...only witnesses to my greatness.

I live on Lake Travis and have to drive 25 miles to work. If it's raining or foggy it takes me 45 minutes. Otherwise it only takes about 30 (I don't have to be there until 9:00-9:30). Whatever you do, don't live out off 183 unless you absolutely have to. ------------------
