Texas Tech has good looking women that know how to milk cows. That's what a friend says anyway... I'm not implying anything - just relaying the message. P.S. - I feel for you.
Out of curiosity, why is the Health and Sciences center in Amarillo, while the actual college is in Lubbock? The cities are similar in population, and IMO, Lubbock is a nicer place.
Amarillo is ok, as I have been there numerous times over the past few years (I live in Lubbock). Everything that is worth going to is either by I-40 or I-27/US287. Lubbock is only a two hour drive from Amarillo, so if you want to see the main Tech campus or go to a Tech/A&M or Tech/UT game its an easy drive. The one thing you really need to be prepared for is the winter. Amarillo gets a substantial amount of snowfall and rain, and it can be an adventure driving. Also, don't think you can drive back to Houston for weekends, Amarillo to Houston is an 11-12 hour drive. BTW, "partially dry" (refering to a previous post) means that there are parts of the county where you can't buy alcohol. There are parts of Potter County (Northern part of Amarillo) that are "wet" and you can get as drunk as you want. On a side note, technically, the City of Lubbock is "dry", but you can buy alcohol at bars, clubs, and resturants, and buy your own booze at stores in the Southern part of Lubbock County.
The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center has always wanted to branch out into different Texas cities, and if I remember right the pharmaceutical industry has a large presence in Amarillo. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is trying to build a new Medical School in El Paso and has facilities in Midland/Odessa too.
The reason is that Amarillo residents donated $12 million to build the pharmacy school. I don't know about the med school, but they probably paid for that too.
I may be moving to Amarillo myself, although I won't really know for a few days or even weeks. I grew up in Houston (lived there until my mid-twenties), but have lived in a few smaller cities in Texas as well. I've enjoyed both. I really don't get all the "Ewwww, yuck" responses. Perhaps my tastes aren't as refined as some. Most of the time, it's the peope that make the difference.
Thats what Ive been trying to say this whole time. The people there are awesome. My parents grew up there, My sister, brother-in-law, grandparents, aunts and uncle live there now. Its not a bad place at all. A little on the conservative side, but hey.... Its west Texas. Im not kidding about the hot chicks...... If you can breathe, you will probably get hit on.... The girl to guy ratio is probably 2 to 1.
This post makes me happy. I was worried about going into pharmacy school and seeing some ugly creatures, cause ya know...most of the time the smarter you are, the uglier you get.
