Anybody on this board from Amarillo? I got into the school of pharmacy at texas tech, and school starts in a few weeks. I met my roommate at the interview and when he talked about clutchfans.net, I knew we had a lot of things in common. We're both from Houston, so we don't know where to go to eat or to have fun. Any recommendations on malls, restaurants, or places to go have fun?

    Oh man Amarillo? Urgh.

Those feed lots really make the town smell like crap. Real crap, in fact.

The only place I know in Amarillo is the Big Texan Steak House. Haven't been since I was a teenager but I remember it being pretty durn tasty. It's now known as the Big Texan Steak Ranch. If you eat the 72 oz Sirloin w/ baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail and a roll in one hour, it's free!

Don't listen to these fools, AMA ain't that bad. The people are super nice, there are hot chicks galore, and there is plenty to do (restaurants, lakes nearby, pretty decent bars, close to New Mexico/Colorado, shopping). There is even a pretty decent mall. The rent is ceap - Its not a bad place to be for a few years.

Check out my sister (lead anchor) and brother-in-law (sports) on the 6 and 10 on the weeknights - channel 4 (NBC) KAMR Channel 4

If you need any other info, drop me a line. And don't listen to the haters - ;)

Check out the Golden Light for some good live music. Also I beleive there is a pretty cool sports bar called Brewster's..... Live music, beer, etc.

Lots of bars on Amarillo Ave and 6th Ave

camping in Palo Duro Canyon (not in the summer!) is pretty cool. there's a great West Texas history museum in Canyon.

Went to a wedding there at the end of June...Smells like cow crap, real bad when the winds blow just right...The have a Grahmn Central Station (5 clubs in one venue) that was pretty packed...Some of the Hooter's girls were freakin' smokin' hot, which surprised me, but was much appreciated...

Good luck and try not to go crazy...

I have a friend out there now -- at the pharmacy school. I've been to Amarillo several times, and I was born in a town called Borger, which is about 45 minutes away. We moved when I was two though, so I don't remember it.

Amarillo is sort of the consummate trucker's town. The place is sort of one giant truck stop. That's not to say it's a bad place, it just has that sort of feel -- like being at a Travel America or something. It's a decent-sized town, and there are always conventions and such there. One of the neatest things is that you'll be close to New Mexico, where you can go skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer. Personally, I love NM, and Amarillo's really the last city for some time if you're traveling west.

Thanks for the replys. I wasn't too happy about going to Amarillo, but now I'm okay with it. It doesn't seem like there are that many places to go to, but that's okay for now. One of my friends told me that the city is "dry", but after people mentioning bars and stuff, I'm pretty sure he was just joking around. I just hope the city doesn't smell bad like some of you said.

What part of "thousands of cows ****ting thousands of pounds of cow****" makes you think it *won't* smell bad.

It reeks. There's good days & bad days, from what I've heard. If the wind's blowing right, you can smell it from miles & miles away. Been bird hunting in the area, but never really spent any time in town. On a bad note, Potter County is listed as "partially dry" here: http://www.texassafetynetwork.org/issues/wet_dry/map_list/list.php No idea what "partially dry" means in this case.

I was there for 2 weeks, and it smelt quite normal, and even pleasant at times.... much better than the smells comin out of most parts of houston.

I guess if you live out near the cow ****, it smells like it... but near the city and the burbs it aint bad at alll.

I believe the feed lots are on the southwest side and the packing plant is northeast. If you're downwind...

I think Tech is southeast, and supposedly fairly safe from the odor.
