I've been happy in my tiny upper west side studio, but the management company wants to raise my rent a whopping $250 per month. So, I'm not going to sign another lease and start looking for another place to move into on Jan 1st. There are enough New Yorkers on this board that I figured I'd post here to try every connection I can- all the good apartment finds in NY usually happen by chance and connections. And chance connections. If you know of any places opening up, or any friends looking for a roomate, or any frieds who are also looking for a place and willing to share, let me know. I'm willing to look in Brooklyn and Queens also. Help me out, guys!
Good luck. NY and SF are the hardest cities in America to find an apartment. Might as well use this board as a resource. You never know. You will definitely have more luck finding something in Brooklyn or Queens.
there's some stuff in my building i think, but you'd have to take a loyalty oath to the bush admin to get in...
I think a grand is doable. When we bought our catskill home, we wanted to get into a small one bedroom. Found one for 950. Course it's a 4th floor walkup. Nolen there's all kinds of places around Astoria that can be had for a grand. And it's only 20 minutes to Manhattan by subway. It's a nice hood too.
hi - my rent in the UWS just got upped too.. i wouldn't mind the moving cause the neighbors downstairs are downright dirty... price range is around 1300.. should i try alphabet city or chelsea? i'm living in a walkup now but am angling for an elevator building.. just thought my fellow ny rocket fans might know something.. moving in NY is the biggest pain in the arse ever.. add that broker fees and stingy landlords..
Living in Harlem isn't bad at all. Not to sound racist or anything, but a lot of people get the wrong impression of Harlem because of the large black population. It's kind of like parts of South Side Chicago (ie. Hyde Park) - they're not bad at all. Plus Harlem is a really good location for the price, being in Manhattan and all.
well said slandBalla, i lived at 110th and Lex for two years, right on top of the subway station. it was a two bedroom for $1100, with a broker fee. the problem is putting up a deposit, first and last month rent and a broker fee. it usually comes between $2000 and $3000 up front to move in NYC. but like you said Nolen, its all about connections now we live on the UES in a three bedroom for $600 a piece, with no broker fee, first month and security only. we saved tons of money not having to pay a fee or last months rent, plus we are in a prime spot(York Ave and 73rd). granted its cozy(aka shoebox) but it works for three of us. we just re-signed our lease for a year and the rent stayed the same Nolen, you can easily find what you are looking for... first try craigslist, if you dont have luck i can give you the number to the management office that got us this aprtment.
Thanks across110th- I guess we know what your handle is from now. I'm cool with Harlem. It's a completely different place from what it was 10, 20 years ago. I feel comforatble as a white dude there. I'll look at places there if the right deal comes along. Man- $600 each on east 72nd? Wow. I'm all about Craigslist. Email me the number of your management company, tho, I'm interested. NY BROKERS SUCK! I despise them. They are spineless reptilian creatures who charge thousands of dollars to do almost nothing. Bastards.
Done, and absolutely they suck. sorry , there are easier ways to get a pad than paying $3000 up front...
