If you read the book then you know about the gotcha ending. Hell, the trailers give it away as well. The critics whose opinions I trust all say it's more an exercise in style than narrative. Translation: It looks really good and well crafted but the flow of story sucks. Still gonna watch because a bad Scorsese film is 100x better than a good Michael Bay film.
Scorsese doesn't fail very often.... Seen all of his classics.. To name a few... Taxi Driver New York, New York Mean Streets GoodFellas Cape Fear Casino Gangs of NY
I have no idea if it's going to be good or not, but I wouldn't let the push back bother you. As was mentioned earlier it was because of financing. If the studio released it earlier they would have had to pay for a huge advertising, and Oscar campaign, to please the parties involved and try to get it nominated and possibly win some Oscars. By waiting until now, they won't have to worry about that, until maybe 9 months down the line if at all.
Th eofficial verion as that the studio didn't have enough money left in the 2009 bidget to give it a proper ad campaign. I believe it was $30 mill.
Read the book. Overall enjoyed it. Spoiler But I hated the ending. As I was reading it, I predicted the "twist" and hoped against hope that he was going a different direction. I was ultra-disappointed when it turned out I was right. Scorsese doesn't miss too often (I was disappointed with "Bringing Out The Dead", and was underwhelmed by "Gangs of New York" despite DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis giving amazing performances) so I have high hopes for this. And DiCaprio is highly underrated as an actor. If he didn't have such a baby face, I think he'd have at least a couple of Oscars by now.
I have to disagree about DiCaprio. I think his best work was actually around Eating Gilbert Grape time. He's quite inconsistent. He was very good in Gangs of New York. He was adequate in the Aviator. He sucked balls in Titanic. It was absolutely horrid acting. He was fairly good in Blood Diamond. I think a lot has to do with the Director and editing for him. He does well with Scorsese, so I'm sure it'll be good. But I think he is usually rated about right. Depp is an underrated actor. Look at the movie Finding Never Land. A part like that is something DiCaprio could never pull off as well as Depp. I could see him cast in it, but he just isn't capable of doing as good of a job. It isn't like I think Depp is horrible, because most of the time he isn't. Romeo and Juliet as well as Titanic were absolutely horrible though. It's just I don't think he's all that special. He's an above average actor. Sorry to side track.
Hmm. I just spoiled the ending for myself by youtube trailers. In my desperate bid for seeing if it was out on the internets, I spoiled it. Ahh well, I'm still psyched about the movie though. Good marks on Rotten Tomatoes so far and from the overall user community which is a good sign.
I agree he can be inconsistent, but I still think he's underrated. His performance in "Revolutionary Road" was amazing, and deserving of some recognition, IMHO. I thought he was much better than "fairly good" in "Blood Diamond" and outstanding in "Catch Me If You Can". I didn't think he "sucked balls" in Titanic: I think his character was poorly written. He did his best with a bad script.
I have read your post here several times, FB, and the part I have quoted is confusing me. You are still talking about Depp but you mention Titanic..Depp wasn't in Titanic or am I missing something here?
Just wanted to say that I would like to see this movie but I know my wife would have no interest so it is going to be one of those rent movies and watch by myself when I have the time to do it. DiCaprio has become the new Robert DeNiro for Scorsese...seems he is in every Scorsese movie now just like DeNiro used to do.
I'll definitely be going to see this. DiCaprio , is one of my favorite actors along with Johnny Depp.
The movie was definitely refreshing. Scorsese has redefined a genre channeling Hitchcock. Leo was brilliant in the film.
Wikipedia certainly doesn't take long to spoil the movie. I have no interest in seeing it so it's OK, but sometimes I like to read about the production and background of a movie before seeing it.
DiCaprio is very good actor but I am kind of dissapointed he is the new DeNiro. Aviator worked but for The Departed, Gangs of New York, and from what I've seen of Shutter Island it would've been nice to have someone who was less of a pretty boy. IMO it would've been great if Nicolas Cage had taken up DeNiro's mantle with Scorcese. He is a very good actor and his talent often seems wasted on the action schlock that he often does.
