I always like a good horror movie; but usually these days you're stuck watching either a subpar Hollywood remake of a decent Japanese horror movie or another run-of-the-mill teen slasher. The Saw franchise, in my opinion, was a fresh of breath air to all the other crap that was out there. Now to be sure, it's not for everyone, but neither is the whole horror genre in general. So I couldn't resist seeing the final chaper in the Saw trilogy last night, and from beginning to end, it was intense. The third film I felt represented the best and worst of the series. Overall, despite a few weaknesses I think it improved upon the previous two; acting was decent (I'd say on par w/ the original), lots of "games" this time and it did a nice job filling in all the holes left by the previous two. It was also the worst because, by far, it had the most painful to watch, gory, sit in your seat and squirm moments of the whole franchise; combine those moments in the first two and you still don't reach the level Saw III took it to. It was that bad (but a good bad). And I have a pretty high threshold, but damn if some of the moments in this didn't leave me squirming. That said, there are a few weaknesses...most notably one. And that is there really isn't many characters to root for this time around. The first one you had Danny Glover or Cary Elwes or Leigh Whannell (played Adam); in the second you had Donnie Whalberg and his son or even Shawnee Smith (Amanda); but the third, there isn't much here to root for. I will say the doctor does redeem herself by the end and I wanted her to survive. But other than that, there isn't anyone else to really root for, unless you want to cheer for Tobin Bell. The character's deaths though do have meaning; can't really say that about some of the deaths in the second one. Anways, if you're in the mood to possibly lose your lunch or you wanna check out a great horror flick on Halloween, you can't really go wrong with Saw III. Or you can flake out and see Grudge 2 with the preteen crowd .
I thought the story was great and the twist at the end was played out well. I will agree that this movie had some intense gore moments, most notably at the beginning and near the end ("crucifiction"). I don't know how they'll make a Saw IV... Spoiler Jigsaw died..
I just came back from the movie. Surprisingly good. I'm really not a huge fan of gore movies, I like suspense and ghost stories, that kind of thing. This movie does mess with your mind, though. The acting wasn't the greatest, but come on, you don't critique performances in this kind of movie. I felt my stomach get a little weak, but I didn't blow chunks like during Hostel (by the way, I want to kill the person who suggested Hostel 2...). It really is hard to talk about it without spoiling it, but I would recommend seeing it, as long as you don't consume any Ipecac or clam chowder beforehand... It ended kind of abruptly and everyone in the theater was completely still sitting in their seats, kind of amazed at the wrongness of it all, but at the same time, at least in my opinion, marvelling at how everything came together. 'Twas profound.
I should say it's the final chapter for the original creators. I read an article the other day that they're ready to move on but that it's entirely up to the studio if the series continues. So for me, I think it's done. Whatever happens after this I doubt will be as good especially since... Spoiler Not only did Jigsaw die but so did his apprentice, Amanda. If they were to do a sequel it would have to follow some copycat murderer, which would kind of suck...because how could anyone fill Tobin Bell's shoes. They would probably have to do a prequel then, which doesn't seem like it would work to well.
I saw the movie last night and I really enjoyed it although I did not tin it was quite as good as the first 2. I did read on the internet somewhere that they are already signed through Saw 6 and the guy who plays jigsaw is signed through all of them. He must be returning in some way Spoiler athough he is dead
I agree I think the Saw series was great but I was really disappointed by Hostel. It was just disgusting and really had no plot. I was angry when I wnet to see Saw III and the last preview before the more was for Hostel 2.
i saw it opening night, i thought it was good, but though the sequel was better IMO, but agreed with JYD that there was nobody to really root for to live in the 3rd one. The dude that wanted revenge for his son's death was interesting. I liked how they went back to the first 2 movies and spilled more details in the 3rd. Spoiler A prequel would be nice, maybe show who the hell that girl was Jigsaw was with when he was going through his stages. The surgery part had to be one of the most grusome scenes I have ever witnessed, along with the dude with all the hooks.
