Maybe he's inexplicably changed his ways, but Travers has always liked every movie under the sun (unless it was truly, truly, truly awful). He doesn't exactly have the best reputation as a critic. Some random observations around the web (yes, I know, not exactly scientific):
The guy is an instant blockbuster. It looks entertaining and different from any other movies I have seen. Would totally like to check it out but i will be off in el mexico....maybe ill see it in spanish
I saw this last night and I agree with a lot of the critics. The premise is fun and for the first 45 minutes the movie is funny and entertaining. Then they start adding in these ridiculous backstories and villains that come from out of nowhere, and the movie tries to become serious and fails miserably. I wouldn't make an effort to see this movie. 40/100
It's crap. The first half is decent, but most of the best gags were already spoiled in the trailers. Then it takes a turn in the second half and becomes a really cheesy drama. The only thing that salvaged it for me was the cast. They did the best they could with very little to work with. The Last Action Hero comparisons aren't too far off. That movie also took an unnecessarily dark turn in its final half hour after a promising start.
Will Smith is by all means a hot commodity. A lot of people like him, and a lot of people respect him. He has developed a reputation now. He has fans that will go to any movie he makes. He has to be careful though, if he keeps making movies like this(according to the reviews) his hype will die down.
Just got back from seeing this one. I liked it. Yes, it could have been better overall, I suppose. Citizen Kane it isn't. But I found it enjoyable.
Just got back from seeing it as well. Again, my previous statements stand. **** the critics. Is it really that hard to please everyone these days? Yeah it started out as a funny comedy and then became a drama towards the end. BIG DEAL. Would I rank it among the top 50 greatest movies of all time? No, but that's not the point, lol. It was an enjoyable movie and well worth the $6 I paid to see it tonight.
It's true that Hollywood has needed an anti-hero movie for a while, but did they really have to make him black? My roomie brought this up and was kind of offended in a "not really" way but I see his point. To be fair, he said "psh." Billy Bob would have been fun, but not much of a stretch from his typecast perch of mighty scoundrelosity.
I'm a big fan of both Smith and Bateman, but this just wasn't a good film. The first half was entertaining, but the second was not. It felt like they couldn't decide whether they wanted an action/comedy or an action/drama. It was so NOT funny in places and even mildly disturbing. The overwrought drama was just boring at times. A MUCH better example of a movie that had a similar feel but really worked was Bad Boys. It was dramatic and over the top but it was always entertaining and they managed to work in the funny with the drama. This just didn't. I was disappointed.
It wasn't as bad as everyone has made it out to be. It was ok, it's no Incredible Hulk or Iron Man, but it was enjoyable. There were some flaws and I think they could of did a better job explaining the whole "god" thing and making them in pairs. But you could basically get it. Spoiler Was it just me was did anyone find it extremely obvious that Theron's character had something to do with Hancock and his origin?
Would have wanted to see a dick-ish superhero since that was what made me interested in the movie in the first place (and the whale scene), but after the reviews and what my friends said about the second half, I went ahead and watched Wanted instead.
as I was watching TV this morning I watch GalaxyQuest It is a truly entertaining movie to me comedy . . .lil action etc this is what I kind of expected from Hancock more on the comic Side with a thin slice of action Rocket River
That's what they said about wild wild west, yet it was a hit in the box office. =/ Salma hayek in a corset was the only thing that saved that movie from being a complete disaster.
That's EXACTLY how I felt. I was disapointed. I felt like they had NO idea what to do with the movie. There never seemed to be any consistency with the story, it just seemed flat out awkward at times. The first 45min were very entertaining, although they showed WAY too much in the trailers. After that the writters seemed lost and the movie took a turn for the worst.
Saw it last night. I enjoyed it, but readily admit that the movie is schizophrenic: the first half is broad comedy, the second half is much more heavy. I think the reason a lot of people aren't liking it is because Will Smith is played so very much against the type of characters he usually plays. But I liked how it turned the whole superhero mythos on it's ear. It asked some very interesting questions: what if Superman wasn't so darn perfect? What if he was an alcoholic? Or irresponsible? Or anti-social? What if Superman acted more human than Kryptonian? What if Lois Lane married Jimmy Olsen instead? What would that do to Clark Kent? And just who cleans up after the mess Superman inevitably makes? The movie tried to address some of these questions, and I think it mostly succeeded.
