Man! i certainly would like to get taht guy. he hits Js, shoots free throws, drives, hits 3's, and has awesome hops. that guy would be an excellent SF for us. He also is an excellent looking athlete, he looks about 6'7 or 6'8 not 6'6. just my 2cents but he would be an excellent pick IMO. ------------------ --TEX
"With the 6th pick in the 2000 NBA Draft....the Houston Rockets select....Morris Peterson from Michigan State." You beat me to it, Salsa. Although he had a very quiet first half, this guy looks incredible. I watched him literally walk on air to catch a Mateen Cleaves alleyoop during crunch time. He has a solid jump-shot, is a steady defender, has the perfect size for a small forward, and has athleticism to spare. Granted, he can't take his man one on one off the dribble very efficiently, but out of everyone in College Basketball, I think he moves the best without the basketball. He's the type of guy who thrives off of dominant point guards as he and Cleaves have built good chemistry amongst themselves. Mo Pete fills the lanes on the break, and in the half-court set generally sets up on the left block, and curls either to the rim, to the middle, or pulls up for that high-arching 3-point shot. He won't be a star, but I think he can be a perfect supporting small forward on a very good team. With work on his ball-handling, he could become even better. I think we've found our man. ------------------ "Sources tell me that the Blazers held a team meeting after the two losses..." - "Pistol" Pete Vescey with the inside scoop.
cabbage i saw alleyoop on tv too. that was damn awesome. i forgot to put that in my post. not to ur right cabbage he played well in CRUNCH TIME and is a SENIOR and a LEADER. while he might not be like a francis type superstar i can see him making an all star appearance and having an excellent career if he fully realizes his potential. in a couple seasons he could be a 15-17 ppg guy. damn he and francis would make the courtside countdown weekly i can already see ally oops from francis to morris and vice versa. and the best part of all he is VERY likely to be around when we pick unless some other team falls completely for him. ------------------ --TEX [This message has been edited by TeXaSalsa (edited March 25, 2000).]
Hehe people finally noticing him...remember this guy is a scorer, can take the scoring load off Francis if needed. ------------------ Check out the best source for draft info. Draftsource.net [This message has been edited by rocketsfan34 (edited March 25, 2000).]
I can't argue, the guy was awesome today. Like cab said, Peterson is great without the ball and today he was just everywhere. If he can play with the type of heart he played today in the big leagues, he is going to be a very effective player. Probably not a superstar, but a superb complimentary player. Besides, we don't really need a superstar from our 3 position. Rudy T never has too many plays run for his SF, as the Pip fiasco illustrated, and Rudy T will be here for awhile (whether you like it or not) I haven't had the opportunity to watch MichState play that much, but some say Peterson is very similar to a Ron Artest, is that true? Azim da Dream ------------------ No guts, no glory, no brain, same story.
Azim: I don't see any similarities between Ron Artest and Mo Peterson at all. For one, Ron Artest is alot slower than I thought he would be. He is somewhat athletic in terms of body control and leaping ability. I would say his greatest ability is using his power/body control to drive the lane and make up for his lack of foot speed. Ron Artest can't shoot worth a lick. Mo Pete on the other hand is a good spot-up shooter, and has great quickness, but not the power that Artest has. Peterson moves alot better without the ball (because of his great quickness) and has more of an above the rim game. Peterson is also much better in the open court, filling the wings for Cleaves. Don't forget clutch shooter. You guys probably haven't seen him enough games to notice but he's usually the guy forcing up the 3s in the end and makin em, not to mention the foul shooter the opponent is forced to foul. Clutch City shall rise again! ------------------ Check out the best source for draft info. Draftsource.net [This message has been edited by rocketsfan34 (edited March 25, 2000).]
I was wondering how long it would take to mention this guy. I always here alot of speculation that he will be our man. With no Swift in the draft, Peterson is probably my second pick. Granted I am not a Michigan state fan I have only seen a handful of their games so I am kind of curious to know how is his defense. I think Martin will still be number one or two depending on who picks where. The bulls will probably have two picks and they already have Brand and Artest at the 3 and the 4. Do they go for Mihm and Cleaves? I don't think Cleaves will be that good of a pro but who knows. Vancouver will go for something other than a 3 since they have Abdur-Rahim there. Clippers will need somebody to replace Taylor and hopefully we won't have to even worry about Atlanta. So it looks like we may be in good shape to get him. ------------------
Why Cleaves? Barkley has just declared and is obviously the better PG. ------------------ Check out the best source for draft info. Draftsource.net
For a while, I was doing periodical posts about Peterson since the college season began. I felt like I was talking to myself for a while. But I'm glad that you guys have come around and appreciated what Peterson can do. He's a darn good rebounder. I believe his is the top rebounder on the Spartan team which is the best rebounding team in the league. Plays like a cross between Cuttino Mobley and Richard Hamilton. He can break some folks down one on one. That was more evident when Mateen Cleaves was injured earlier in the season, so Peterson had to be the primary guy breaking down D's. But his ability to play off the ball is what makes him good. He's very much like Allan Houston in that respect. He scores in almost every conceivable way. He's a good, but not great athlete. His defense can be pretty suspect sometimes which is natural for most college players. A little slow in his defensive lateral movement. Didn't see the game tonight. But from what ya'll have been saying, it looks like Peterson was doing his normal routine. ------------------
Mo Pete is clutch, no doubt about it. He saved the Spartons bacon yesterday. I like him a lot, but don't know about using a top 5 pick on him. He looks to me like a Shandon Anderson with a little more consistent J from long range. I don't see room for him, Shandon and Mobley though, so we would have to move one of them for sure. As someone pointed out in another thread, Desmond Mason is pretty similar. Though I was thinking Mason wasn't the shooter Mo Pete is, I checked the stats and all his numbers are competitive or better (though he probably is asked to do more for his team), including shooting %'s. Another comparable guy is Carrawell. I would probably rather have Battier than all four of these guys (if he comes out), if he measures close to the 6'8" as listed. Battier looks to me more like a true three in the mold of Bryan Russell, except he can block a few more shots--which I think would work better our team. If Battier doesn't come out and we have the 6 pick or so, I would be inclined to move down to 11 or so (picking up a future #1 in the process) and then get whoever was left between Mo, Carrawell, Mason or maybe Arceneax if a SG/SF is the best player available (may very well be), or draft for another position. Oh, forgot to put Quenton Richardson in there too, I just see many quality yet undersized for SF swingmen out there. I probably wouldn't stretch much for any one of them (like with a 5 pick) but wouldn't mind taking on one if we got some other goodies in the process. Arceneaux is the pick at SF, and he can be had in the second round. He's a scorer that can take some of the pressure off Francis. We need to think big early on. As in PF. We lost our focus in the front court when we lost Bark and DReam. We need some muscle in in the paint. Some muscle that can score 20. With a top six pick, there's no reason why we can't get a twenty plus scorer like Fizer or Martin. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
